I have a 2000 LC and my 6-CD player stopped working altogether. The radio works fine. Has anyone had a similar problem and, if so, how much did it cost to fix the problem?

I would like to stay with the original unit that came with the vehicle, but I have a feeling the dealer will charge an arm and a leg to fix it. A refurbished unit would be fine. I would also consider an entirely new unit with similar features if one exists. I realize this unit is taller than most standard car stereos.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if the Lexus stereo is plug and play for you but if so, I would consider selling mine.

Hi Zeppelin

If you remove the unit yourself, and take it to the Toyota dealer...They should
be able to send it to an approved repair center and get it fixed for no more than $250-$300...thats an average price for virtually any repair on a factory deck...

Sometimes the parts availability(for your specific unit) is the problem, If this is the case, a dealer should not charge you more than $50-$75 to have your radio looked at and diagnosed by the repair center ( i.e. they may still charge you to send it in for an estimate, whether it can be fixed or not)

Another option would be to check into a used, but working unit by one of our fellow members ( like Hoser !).. or on Ebay..etc...Just make sure the replacement you find will work with your current wiring/amps ( most of the time a quick description of the plug/pin configuration on the back of your original unit will suffice).

Good luck !

My 99 LX 6 disc changer (Head Unit - Complete) has been replaced twice under warranty. It exhibited the same problem both times - it would start losing track during CD play, stop playing while searching for track, start playing from a different place or just error out after fruitlessly searching for a while.

That kind of pattern suggests that they had a problem with early units. Although, to be fair, automotive multi-disc changers are plagued with problems in general. High rate of field failures.

I'm on the third unit now, keeping my fingers crossed since warranty expired.

If mine fails again, I'm going to replace it with a good aftermarket single disc player/receiver & separate amp.

(And, no, I will not let anyone else touch my wiring. DIY all the way :) )

Tinkerer, there were several versions of the 98-00 LX470 Sound System. Hopefully, they gave you the latest one... well, it SHOULD be an improved version.

I think the plug on the back of the head units chanced in 2000. I'm not sure though. I bought a single CD/tape/radio head and amp out of 2000 tundra that I installed in my FJ62. I later upgraded the head unit to the 6 disk CD. The single CD was a Fujiten amp and head unit, the 6 disk was a JBL head unit. It was plug and play. I think the 2000 to 2002 head unit will inter chance along as the face is flat. In 2003 the steering controls showed up so may have changed again. I bought all my stuff off of Ebay. The 6 disk head was under $200 and that was a couple of years ago. The prices are even cheaper now. I just read feed back from the seller and make sure they have been around awhile with a lot of happy customers buying audio equipment.

I understand that the unit in my 2000 LC is a Panasonic Multimedia A56811 unit. It can be repaired for $275 if I take it out and send it away for repair. I have learned this info since yesterday and I am not sure it is 100% correct, but I think it is.

My only question is how to remove the dash faceplate without damaging it. It says to pry it off until the clips pop out. Anyone have any advice on this?

Should be like my 99, just start at the bottom corner of the faceplate by the shifter with a flat blade screwdriver and carefully pry until you get the first clip to release, then carefully work your way around until all 4 have released. You may have to use 2 to slowly work the bezel loose, just be sure not to pry so hard that your mar the dash!

Has anyone had problems with their newer DVD/CD changers? mine plays fine now but some disks do miss play on tracks at the end of the CD. The disks seem flawless.

Hey ZEP,
Any update on your CD repair? I have the same model in my 2000 and the cd player is locked up with 5 cds in it and the tape deck sounds awful. I'm thinking of just putting in an after market deck.
Anybody got a suggestion on a good 6 disc player?

ZEp,
I removed the fuse for my radio, put it back in and now the cd player works like new. FYI there is a OEm player on ebay out of a 2000 toyota. starting price is pretty cheap.
