There's a difference between 'spring wire' and 'spring mount'. One is a steel whip antenna, and the other is a, well, spring mount.

Good catch! I was just replying with my argument about springs "not" decreasing performance and luckily spotted your post before I stretched my mouth with my size 14's AGAIN! I was refering to a "spring mount". I stand corrected as "spring wire" antennas are not the same as the "spring mounts" that I got on a high horse about.
A high quality fiberglass antenna will out perform a quality stainless steel antenna when new but after injury's from branches, parking garages, etc.....the SS antenna will still remain largly as it was when new while the fiberglass' performance dwindles.
As most know, antenna and cable selection is more important to ANY CB's performance than the CB's selection itself!

I'm going to get yelled at for joining another radio thread, but you're serious in fact that your antenna performs being mounted in plastic? I know you've DC grounded the attachment, but that in no way implies a good AC/RF ground.

That `base' should be in flat metal.

I'm sorry I wasn't real clear as to how I grounded it. I ran the ground from the antenna base to the frame. I had the cb shop do the standing wave on it and it was good. With it being mounted in the plastic bumperette it allows the antenna to move alot more with no worry of it braking. However as soon as I can afford one of slee's rear bumpers I am going to get a shorter antenna and mount it on the tire carrier.
