Best part would be the manual aircon controls!

soo many questions that I wish the cl resident gx electronics expert hzao was on this board.

1) Does this essentially piggyback off the Lexus infotainment unit? Alot of these units require a functioning Lexus Infotainment stack, and simply tap into the video input portion and add in a android tablet thats well integrated rather then having it stuck on a mount.

2) The stock image is actually a 2022 Lexus infotainment brochure pic. How is the coloring quality of the fake brushed metal surround and does it match the bottom of the oem parts?

3) How does the system work in high temp conditions? Some of these units tend to have issues when left exposed to the sun. Once the air condition cools the cabin they work fine. But oem works regardless.

4) How long does it take for the unit to go to sleep or turn off? How fast does the system boot on?

5) If the system hangs, will a simple vehicle power cycle reset the system or do you require a manual reset? Is this reset procedure simple or will it require one to tear the dash apart?

6) how does it handle its inbuilt bluetooth and the vehicles bluetooth system?

7) steering wheel and lexus voice command still work?

8) Can this system accept aftermarket cameras to essentially diy 360 cam?

9) Can this use the above cams to also enable dvr function'

lots of online places have similar setups, some even take it a step further and adapted colorful temp wheels like the nx/rx, or full glass cockpit. tempting but so many unknowns.

Vendor for unit in video is a sponsor on CL. I'd like to see if instructions for 10-13 models are similar to that other unit you posted. There is no ribbon cable swaps on '14-21' installs looking at Bob's video.

1. Most of these require the "stock" stereo but replace the infotainment

2. Bob noted in video color match

3. ••Feedback from installs needed

4. ••Feedback from installs needed

5. Good question... IIRC.. there are even issues with GROM or VLine where some have put in a switch in glovebox to power cycle the head unit

6. It appeared to me that BT and included WIfi are handled by the head unit

7. ••Feedback from installs needed

8. Bob seemed to indicate in video that was possible.

9. ••Feedback from installs needed

Saw this video this morning. I'm leaning towards going this route. But it might be more involved of an install for 2010-2013's according to GX Bob.

Also from reading the comments on the GX BOB video it seems like the OEM backup camera is inop after install

There is also mention about temp settings only being in celsius

I’ve reached out to vendor

Watch the video.

For a/c heater or outside?
I use the dash temp for outside.
no, this is for the hvac. Common problem that Hzao has written up in their aftermarket survey of android headunit replacements. I believe Lsait, a common vendor that really was committed to aftersales support did offer a software update for their lineup, but I guess other makers never figured it out or have not bothered since.

Thanks as usual @Acrad!

Does this unit throw any airbags or lighting error codes on stock vehicles, requiring the resistor fix? I ask since GXBob rig is immensely modified on the lighting side.

On the website, it does state that steering wheel controls remain working. It did note that a front camera can be added, and I think alluded to adding 360° or did it mean able to keep the factory 360° if you already have it.
Yeah, there are a few questions that hopefully will be answered by the brave few who are first to install and report back.

Got it. I could live without freedom units if everything else worked. 🤣

I'll muddle through with my Beatsonic, which I previously lambasted as being outrageously priced (at half the price of this unit). Though I do understand that this, like a Pedal Commander, will impact the all-day, e'ry-day driving experience...

seems the cam issues have been partly resolved to due pal/ntsc settings
airbag malfunction is present with these, probably needs the resistor
imperial units tbd

Anxious to hear some longer term, day to day use review. I am in the car A LOT, 30K miles a year so having Carplay in the GX would be a game changer. I installed one of those "add on" carplay screens and as janky as it looks I use it a ton and really like the look of a "factory" install.

I thought about Beatsonic but the updated screen looks great.
