My FJ60 needs some carb adjustment. After talking to a local cruiser tech, he recommends a new carb and not rebuilding the stock one. Either a Weber or Holley was his recommendation. His estimate was $1200 for everything which includes adjusting valves and timing. Does this sound a little high?

I recomend sending it JimC and he'll rebuild it for around 300 bucks.
He is a member of this board and a respected carb rebuilder, he did mine and my truck runs 100% better.

I wouldn't go anywhere close to a Holley or Weber. Don't get me wrong Holley and Weber make good carbs, I just don't think you can get any better the stock carb.

Do some searching on here. Stay with the stock carb and rebuild it yourself or have it rebuilt. He just wants to sell you another carb probably. The timing takes minutes to do if you have a gun. Also the valve adjustment is not hard to do yourself.

that sounds kinda expensive... the only weber i would let near my cruiser is the kind you cook burgers and steaks on.

Ouch. You can run the valves yourself if you are skilled enough to do minor tune-ups. I have a Jim C. carb on my rig, and it runs beautifully. I know Jim test runs all the carbs he rebuilds on his test mule, so when you get it you bolt it on and it runs right. You can reach him at FJ40Jim@aol.com.

I think a current rebuild is $350.00. That would leave enough out of the $1200.00 for a new suspension or ARB front bumper or some big meats to roll around on!

Good luck,

Brett

There are all kinds of different opinions on carbs, so I might as well add mine. I would not put a weber or a holley on my cruiser. No way, no how.

I agree with rallydriver. Send your carb off to Jim C. for a rebuild. It will be better than new since he actually bolts it to a 2F engine and adjusts it before sending it back. When I got mine back from him for my FJ40, I bolted it on, gave it a little gas, hit the key, and the thing just ran perfect, right out of the box. He's been getting unsolicited recommendations for years and years (and years). A little searching here or on birfield will result in more recommendations than you'll care to read.

Good cruiser techs are hard to find. I'm not saying yours is good or bad, just that he didn't make a good first impression with me (both on his recommendations and his prices).

Boy-Do I agree. Anyone reccomending a Holley or a Weber over stock isn't really a Cruiser mechanic. $1200 also sounds like a lot of money. Even a dealer will do a valve adjustment for an hour of shop time, so $1100 for a carb and install is excessive.

Definitely send it to Jim C. 5 years ago I sent my FJ40 carb to him for a rebuild, then I installed it. I was not as mechanically confident as I am now and did not really believe it would start. Long story short-5 cranks or so and zoooom. No one was more suprised than me when it started. It's run perfectly since. It seriously is the best $300 you can spend on your Cruiser.

Any thoughts on a new OEM carb from Toyota??

Having an expert Land Cruiser carb rebuilder rebuild your old carb is the most economical AND mechanically sound way to go. I, through a series of bad decisions and small tragedies had to put a new OEM carb on mine. Cost about $600+ as I recall, but bolted it on, car started, ran perfect, drove it to CO from soCal the next day no problems. Haven't had to have the smog checked yet, though. That's one area where the rebuild could be an advantage over stock new OEM.

you can get a rebuilt oem carb from these guys carberator exchange for 265 delivered. i got one for my LC from them and it was fantastic....give em a call, or search them on the web.

I recommend AGAINST Joe Blow Rebuilds All Carburetors. Did that on my '83 (before I knew about JimC) & had to take it back: throttle plate didn't close completely. Their "test mule" was a HonDatToyVW inline 4cyl.

just because you had a bad experience with your carb rebuilder, doesnt mean that all places are bad. i havent had ANY PROBS with my rebuilt carb and the LC runs better than ever.
