Carb gasket or NO?-real time

I am putting my newly rebuilt carb and a replacement for my disintegrated heat shield/spacer back on on and have a question. I'm fairly certain that there was no gasket between the insulator and the intake manifold. However I am not so sure if there is a gasket required between the carburetor and the insulator. Anybody online that can help now? Thanks in advance.

I thought the gasket was a part of the insulator? Mine was disenigrated, so I got one from JimC when he rebuilt my carb. I think he siad it wasn't necessary, but I one back anyways.

Just talked with Mark A. whom did my carb and he said no gasket. If the insulator had one as part of it, there is no trace of it left on the original insulator or my replacement.
 
for my 78 i bought a replacement insulator from SOR and it came with a gasket for in between it and the intake and in between it and the carb..

Are you sure? It is bonded on there on mine. But it wouldn't hurt to use an additional gasket.

How many times does the bonded gasket work though. I have always used kit gaskets, or made my own for that interface, both below and above the insulator. However, I know that there is material on the insulator, but mine is fairly hard and smooth as glass, does this continue to seal after this point?

I also worked on one side of the insulator, and chipped some orginal gasket off of it, but it is really bonded on there. I figured you can't really replace the original material, correct?
 
Correct, it is pretty much impossible to scrape the rock hard asphalt gasket off the not so hard plastic insulator.

The correct repair is to replace the block.

If somebody milled the old gasket & glue off, just into the plastic, then a new gasket could be assured of sealing.

The block can be reused many times if it is not damaged by gasket sealant or gasket removal attempts.
My carb dyno engine has had hundreds of carbs bolted on top of the stock insulator, still seals fine.
 
All I know is I put it together without gaskets and it runs beautifully. But, now I have a coolant leak. I suspect water pump...no small job small since the addition of power steering! Dang thought I would get to start driving it!
