Is this CAPTCHA system new? Is there by chance a different option? Logging in now takes a long time with it. Multiple tests is over the top.

Unless you log out, it doesn't appear. Easy fix: don't log out.

A number of us have noticed that we couldn't get past this process w/o updating PW. Was that intentional?
it wasn't, but password updates are a good thing. I got notified today from Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach - https://haveibeenpwned.com/ that one of my email addy's was part of a recent breach (along with 57m others) I update passwords regularly, use 2FA, etc.
Bots are a growing issue....username/email/password/etc data get stolen and bots start hitting sites and seeing where they work. I'm continually working to keep logins and data as secure as possible. And, no surprise, lots of users replicate passwords across multiple sites.
