Team,

I am headed to Cape Lookout next week. I am looking for any tips and tricks that you wish you knew. I plan to kayak, paddle board, and fish.

We are staying in the cabins.

I plan to fuel up one last time prior to the ferry. I heard they sell ice over there.

Thank you.

They do have ice on the island as well as gas in case you need it. The store at the ferry is very well stocked so in case you forget anything they will likely have what you need.
I don't know about paddle boarding or kayaking, it's been pretty choppy the both times I've been over there.
Definitely plan on fishing, bring lots of heavy weights or sputniks as the current can be pretty strong.
Also plan on bringing bug repellent as they can be pretty bad this time of year from what I hear.
The cabins have no electricity, so plan on bringing a battery or generator if you need it. They do have hot water and also have a gas stove and oven.

Thank you. I have solar panels and bluetti box. I was thinking paddle boarding / kayaking on the sound side. I will get some bigger weights.

Went over Memorial Day weekend. I'll share a few thoughts.
  • It's windy as hell. Bring shelter and something to block the wind.
  • It's sunny as hell. Bring sunscreen, shade, etc.
  • Bring as much drinking water as possible. They have potable water available, but it's nasty.
  • Ice and gas is available, but not cheap on the island. Bring as much as you think you'll need.
  • Keep an eye on the weather. If it looks like it's going to change on you and you want to leave, call the ferry as easily as possible.
  • For fishing, have big weights and live bait. Have really only had luck with fresh bait.
  • Fishing regulations have changed on a few species, so check before you keep anything.
  • Take shower stuff. The showers there are actually quite nice for what they are.
  • I would bring a battery-operated (think DeWalt 18V) fans. They saved me from sweating all night.
  • If you want a fire, you will need to bring your own wood. So, stock up at home.
Hope that helps!

The fans - ordering now. That is awesome.
The water - I have a 2, 5 gallon one for the house, I will fill and bring with me.

Thank you!
