I took the radio out of my 92 80 series yesterday to swap it out for a newer unit. The wiring wasn't right for my newer radio so I put the old one back in, and now the sound is really muted when it plays. If I move the radio just right the sound goes back to normal, any ideas on what has happened?

I don't know but check out the "did you know" thread by @NLXTACY

Evidently you have additional options for wiring up your system without having to cut any wires.

Assuming you didn't intentionally clip any wires before deciding to put your old radio back; my guess is that a wire got pulled loose in the radio wiring loom. With luck it is a wire in the loom that comes out of the radio, since you'll be replacing that with your aftermarket radio unless you're switching to another Toyota (or Scion) radio.
You clearly already figured out how to get your radio out, but for people with weak Google skills, this video helped me.
