In my FJ60 I'm looking to put a set of cable lockers in. The lockers are really rough (rusty). Since the front on the 60 series is a full floater, can I just rebuild and put the innards (cable locker third member rebuilt) in place of the the existing open differential. Essentially swap out the differentials.

For the rear, since it will be a full floater, will all the external parts (brakes, hoses, etc) be a bolt on fit to the new used FF rear end?

I'm obviously trying to avoid replacing everything if not needed as the existing complete axles are in very good shape. I understand all the oil seals, gaskets and bearings will be replaced throughout the rear and in the front differential.

Thanks in advance!

IIRC, the locking diffs will require a notch be ground into the flange of the axle housing where the diff slips into it. you will also need a long splined left front inner axle to realize the locking capabilities of the diff(won't work without long spline left side shaft) other that that, the front is a pretty much bolt in affair. the rear, however, will need some more attention paid. You have a semi floater in there now and want to swap in DIFFS alone? Or have a complete axle housing for rear full floater? If the first, you're going to need some more parts, if the second, you're pretty much just a bolt in job. If you're planning of buying the flanges to turn a rear semi into a full float, you're also going to need spindles hubs and all of the brake parts as well as axle shafts and seals. also, welding these axles is a bit tricky, so you'll likely want to farm that out so it gets done right. There are several other threads where guys have treaded down the path of semi turned full, and you can read those threads to see where the pitfalls are, and how much other stuff you'll need to pull it off. HTH

Thank you very much for the reply. I will using full floater housing in the rear so I hope I'll be able to use all the brake parts from my semi floater rear and full floater front.

The brake parts from the semi-float will not fit on the full float.

I just looked up the part number for the rear drum of the FF and SF and they are the same. Does that mean the internals are still different? Will look those parts up too.

It appears just to be shoes have different numbers. Can anyone else confirm? Thx

I stand corrected. If the backing plates are the same, then the internals would likely work. There are a couple of 60 FF rears in the for sale section. Maybe one of those guys can take a couple of pics for you and confirm parts. Look up joekatana (?)

I am putting my 60 cable locked 3rd member into 80 elocker axle housing. It is drop in fit with no mods and you get ff axle, disk brakes, e brake and extra width. If you go this route make sure to get complete rear axle except 3rd member.

is your vehicle an 80, or an 80 series axle in a sixty series? I imagine you either have to modify your spring mounts if the 80 axle are going into the 60 or modify the 60 to receive the coil spring. Correct? thanks for the reply.
