...the air cleaner and all associated vacuum lines attached for a while?

I'm trying to find an exhaust leak and I'd like to have the air cleaner out of the way so I can "listen" for leak(if any)on top of the intake/exhaust manifold and air rail.

Anyone ever done this?

Thanks!

btw, I drove it around town a little and man, it feels so much smoother but this leak is driving me nuts. I bet it's going to be something stupid.....:bang:

Before you take the air cleaner off check for leaks around the O2 sensor fitting on the exhaust pipe under the driver side floor. Mine was rusted out and threw me codes after awhile.

Hehehe this is a 2F engine....on codes here!

Thanks though.

It will run, but I think you have to plug a vacuum hose. can't remember which one. Been a while...

Hmm, I wonder which one it is...:hhmm:

When I re-installed my rebuilt carb I didn't plug any hoses and it ran OK, but I'm pretty dumb when it comes to carburation so keep that in mine.

Mine runs fine w/o the air cleaner but I have to plug the hose that runs from the PCV "T" to the air cleaner housing.

You might want to divert or somehow muffle the air pump to air cleaner hose because if your air pump is working right, it makes alot of noise on my rigs...You will be able to hear better...

I know you can run it for a while, but some of the hoses need to be capped off- the ones with the most vacuum for it to run right.

I need to track down my tft, tft, tft leak as well, and it's only really noticeable under load. When I rev the engine from under the hood, the fan noise etc make it hard to isolate.

Runs fine with the air cleaner off. The PCV hose does suck in quite a bit of air, but it doesn't seem to effect anything. plug that if you want. The others, IIRC, are the three to the snout of the aircleaner. Those are really just getting clean atmospheric air (I assume) - no need to cap them. There is also the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner - but that's just a breather.

In other words, cap the PCV to be safe but no worries.

Besides, how do you think all those guys check their valve clearances with the engine running? (In fact, since you have the air cleaner off, you may want to consider adjusting your valves if you haven't in a while.

Interesting, with my PCV host uncapped my cruiser runs really rough, low idle. Do you think I have something wrong?

No, thats normal. That hose has intake intake vacuum on it so without it hooked up it is like an intake leak.

That's weird. Mine definitely pulls vacuum - significantly, but runs fine open. I might just have to mess with it this weekend. I would think with such a huge intake leak it would run like crap.

Thanks to all that responded...I'm gonna go out and try it right now.:wrench:
