My choke cable is way stretched out in my 75 BJ40. Is there any way to shorten it at home?

I think if I cut off the cylinder in the end, I could then thread it through the cylinder and make it shorter. But then how would secure the cable enough to not pull it back out.

Anybody done this before? Don't want to cut it if I can't put it back together.

Thanks,

Russ

I hope it doesn't come as too much of a surprise that Diesel engines (like the B) don't have a choke ... they do have a manual throttle control. Glenn

Yes, sorry @OTBT Thats what I meant. End result is a lot like a choke in that I can idle up during warm up.

So, can I shorten the manual throttle control?

sometimes the bracket gets hit or caught by right foot/boot/etc

gently bend it back to take up the slack

If you can't get the slack right by adjusting the bracket, then the thing you want to shorten the inner cable is often called a 'solderless nipple'. They were used commonly to fix snapped motorcycle throttle or clutch cables, so you should be able to buy them from an old school motorcycle shop. A grub screw grips against the cable to hold it in place. The metal innards of an electrical choc block connector can achieve the same thing, but it won't be shaped like a proper cable end nipple.

But I doubt that cable could actually stretch, so like dead salt posted try an adjust the bracket.

Thanks all. It does look to be bent a fair amount. I'll give that a shot and report back.

Well, it was bent. I took it and very carefully put some heat on it and then bent it back into place.
Unfortunately, the black cable plastic liner has come off in a bunch of places, so when I pull back on the cable, the jacket of the cable moves and not the the internal cable. Can't figure out a way to prevent that from happening at this point. Some of the individual strands within the cable are broken as well.

I think I just need to order a new one
