Can I convert hydraulic power steering pump to electric ?

Hello folks,

I had an oil leak in the steering pump, I fixed it, but it feels heavy to move the steering wheel:steer: (may be sensitive),
but I had a question: can I convert the pump from hydraulic to electric?
to avoid the problem of leakage in the future, and also the power of the pump becomes constant and light.

Sorry, this is the first thread if there are any mistakes.

I know it cost too much but it’s worth it (I think 😂)

Did you ever have you encountered this idea?
Because I wants to know if someone try it.
To give me pros and cons.
 
That’s not quite the way those systems work. To convert to electric power steering (EPS) you would need a different steering column, steering rack and an ecu if not integrated into one of those two components. Basically need a donor vehicle with eps and roughly same length rack as your 100 series. Won’t be cheap or easy but it could be done. Do a write up if you tackle it.

I'm going to ask the electric and hydraulic guys for info and their opinions on this idea. Then I'll tell you what I found

seems, if you replace the rack, with new OEM, and the pump and lines, you would be good for another 20 years, which could be the life of the rig.
versus the cost of a one off unit
and then trying to find someone to work on it if there is a problem down the road.

with the amount of work required you may as well just put in an electric powertrain while you're in there
 
There is an way to do it. The older MR2 from the 90s had electric motor driven power steering vane pumps. You will need to upgrade your electrical system. Just google it and then we can buy a bag of pirates bootie.
 
That doesn’t achieve his goal of eliminating possibility of hydraulic leaks in the future if it retains a vain pump, just won’t drive off engine. but it’s only money
 
There are a bunch of retrofit EPAS systems that the hotrod guys use to upgrade early non-power steering cars. IIRC they mostly go between the rack and steering column at the coupling and are not too difficult to install. You’d probably want to remove any internal valving and such inside the PS rack though to reduce friction losses. You’ll lose the VGRS of course and may need to sort out some dash lights.
