Can a 1983 FJ40 steering wheel be used on a 1979 steering column?

I have a 1983 FJ40. I also have a complete OEM power steering setup from a 1979 FJ40 including steering column. My information is I will need to change steering column due to different lengths.
Will the 1983 steering wheel bolt up to the 1979 column?

Thank you..

9/72 the spline remained same but turn signal switch changed. As well a horn connection. Steering wheel change at this time. while the steering wheel change 8/80 the column where the steering bolts on took didn't. US a some other markets got a collapsible steering column 8/80 many markets continued with the same column that started 9/72. Clam shell cover stayed the same except the with a locking column had a hole drilled for the button to release the key..9/72 on steering wheels should interchange. Just depends one which wheels are available and which style you want.

Yes, it was commonly done here in Africa for aesthetical reasons and better feel of the late wheel. As LITP alludes, all the red button, blue button, Land Cruiser nameplate steering wheels interchange.
