Found three good spots to camp... So now we need to work on a head count and dates...

What kind of trails are there to getting these spots? Forest roads? Side roads? Actual trails?

All but one forest roads but one... That one was pointed out to me by a ranger so Im thinking its legit just not marked.. one is on a road that will be closed in march (that's when they start closing the gates for hunting season)...
I have been in contacted the rangers about my/our intentions on several occasions and I wouldn't want to mess up the progress I have made so far... The best spot (pointed out by the ranger is off of skyward) this means that if we want to make a day out of it we can leave from sylacaga and take the route Matt Brian and I took last year..

Now you got me wanting to bring the Tundra!

This isn't planned for a wheeling trip per-say but the are a few rough roads we can take...
Let's get a head count.. if there is little response I will drop it.

I'll go! It might be just me if Kait can't get off. I would be able to say for sure with a set date wether it will be one or two of us.

Did you get GPS locations for the potential spots?

I am iffy on camping for the time being since both Kids were diagnosed with severe food allergies last spring. We are still working on how to manage them and I would have to plan a route to the nearest hospital, check with everyones food plans...not too relaxing but something I will have to deal with eventually.

Yeah.. I can send them your way.... The one best spot is close to a paved road which should get you to RMC within 20 min.. depending in how toy drive... Also about 10th min from the state park entrance I would hope they had epi pens and some one ego knows how to handle a severe allergic reaction.

Thanks, I'll look into it. On a separate note...What tent is everyone using for family camping. All my gear is old backpacking stuff - I need to find a big heavy family tent.

I always had good luck with Coleman. And they make tents bigger than my house. Kaits dad bought a 3 room Coleman and 4 of us were in there. We could have put a dinning table and entertainment center in there and still would have had room to spare.

Let me know about the allergies and I'll be sure to plan accordingly. I'll try and remember to take my peanut butter out of my BOB but it will be worth reminding me when the time comes. I had a gf with a little brother so allergic to peanut butter they couldn't even keep it in the house. If that's yalls situation I'll make sure to keep my cruiser as closed up as possible and not leave my cooking stuff on the ground.

Want to pick a date and see what happens? Feb 18 is good for me. I have to work Friday night the 10th. that is the only reason I didn't pick the 11. But if you want to do just one night then I can make either. Both of those weekends could be considered a valentines date...

Yep, definitely no peanut butter in our house. We also have eggs, milk, and most tree nuts to worry about. I don't want everyone to make a lot of changes just for us, we can keep the kids out of other peoples stuff - it is mainly interacting with other kids who have eaten PB that would worry me. Antibacterial hand wipes will take care of it I just don't know how stressful it will be trying to police in the woods. Also, with the tree nuts I just don't know what they will have a reaction to. At least one of them tested positive for pecan, so I would assume hickory nuts could be a problem. Last time we went hiking we turned around and they were throwing hickory nuts into the stream. We wiped their hands off immediately so no way to tell if they would have a reaction or not.

We will probably ease into it since they have not been camping at all anyway. Backyard -> overnight just family -> camping with small group(a trip like this one would probably be perfect) -> larger outing like GSMTR

Thanks, I'll look into it. I have been eyeing a kodiak canvas tent but they are an investment for sure.

Mostly lonleaf pine at the site... There were a few others but I didn't pay attention to what... It's about a 1/2 acre grove surrounded by about a 10th acre stand I'd five year old long leaf..

There is an arb rooftop on Craigslist...

Thats not alot of changes for us. Our home made trail mix has dwindled to basically almonds m&ms and goldfish. Kait hates almonds anyway so no big deal there. I'm lactose intolerant so no milk for me. Eggs are too much of a pita to try and take camping. I don't even like peanut butter I keep it as an emergency item.

sounds pretty much perfect all around.

I noticed that - cool, but not practical for a family of four. Especially since it is well north of a grand.
