Looks like the family wants to go camping this upcoming holiday and so I'm open to some ideas. I was figuring on heading to southern NM since I've never camped in that area. Hopefully the temps will be decent during that week but who knows!

We've been to the Gila nat'l forest but will that area be too cold in the higher elevations?

Let's hear some suggestions pls. If anyone else to join up, that'd be great too.

Thanks.

It's likely going to be cold no matter where you go. But obviously the higher the elevation, the colder it will be.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

Dunno if state parks are your cuppa tea, but this place should be warm and there's a great hike. White Sands close by.....

Oliver Lee sounds not too bad as we've never been there. I'll look into it. NM State parks are quite nice I have to say.

Thanks dude.

Yes the Gila will be cold.

Juanito is right - that park is great, if maybe not a little heavy on the asphalt. And Troutrunner is right, the Gila might be too chilly for little (and big) kids. If something more primitive is appealing, Ft. Cummings is a place I've been to many times. It's about half way between Hatch and Demming in low desert creosote land on, uh, whatever that road is. It's a very strange "public lands" site because it doesn't show up on almost any map, but the BLM has established a minimalistic interprative tour. What features are left have been maintained by BLM in an "arrested decay" status. It was also a stop on the Butterfield Stage Route.

Anyway, the place has lot's of things to occupy your interests - history, rock hounding, maybe even some wheeling on the stage route. Just another option for more low desert, primitive camping.

awesome, keep the ideas coming.
