Okay,

I have been researching paint tips to death and I am more confused now then ever. So I thought I would post up my plan and get some feedback from the Paint experts.

My Plan.
This is a frame off resto trail rig, that I would like to have an impenetrable base but I would like be able to touch up with rattle can paint for scratches and such.

Frame plan
1. frame has been sandblasted
2. going to apply some rust bullet
3. sand, rough up for paint
4. paint over with a krylon flat black

Question. Rust bullet says I don't need anything else, but do I need a primer or sealer, or is that over kill?

Body tub, body parts
1. Tub is sandblasted, smaller parts wire wheeled.
kay, this is where I got confused talking to my local paint guy...
I need to
2. apply an etch primer
3. apply a base primer
4. apply a primer sealer
5. Krylon rattle can flat olive drab

Is this correct? Can I buy a etch primer, base primer and primer sealer in a rattle can? (he said this would cost me around $500 can, does this sound correct)

wanted to keep this simple as possible, I do have a compressor and can get a paint gun if I need that as an option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

awesome man i like green olive colors. as far as the paint cost it sounds expensive. i have done two vehicles with a paint call centari paint. its real reasonable and its durable too. i have flat blacked my bros 2006 mustang and it still looks great. it dries fast too. you can get the paint to shine and if you want it flat they have a flatner that they give ya. bad thing with krylon is you will get a tiger stripe affect. hope this has beena little informative. i plan to do my fj80 in the fall just havent decided what color. oh another option is look up Hot Rod Flatz they sell flat colors. there you go man good luck

My .02. If I was going to all the trouble to sandblast etc. I would definitely NOT use rattle can Krylon. For about $75 you can buy a gallon of PPG Shopline acrylic enamel. That and a Harbor Freight HVLP gun will get you a durable nice finish. Etching primer and combo primer/ sealer is all that is necessary for a decent job.

Mello has it right.
Although I did use a self etching primer first (available in a pray can but I shot it with my cheapo HVLP gun) then I used a combo primer/filler/sealer and am going with a PPG acrylic enamel to finish it off.
