Headed to Cabo in January. Thinking about renting a jeep for a day and going off the beaten path. I was going to do a jeep tour; however, maximum of 3 people, so had this idea.

Any suggestions of where to go for day trip? Are there trails or just head to a beach?

Thanks,

k

If I recall they’re pretty expensive to rent. We had that idea on a trip to Loreto/Muleje. We ended up wheeling in a Tercel or whatever they’re called down there. The stream crossings were interesting.

I am seeing $100 a day for a jeep rental from a rental company like hertz.

$100/day would be a steal, to beat on someone else's 4x4. Be sure they have a damage waiver option.

always. :)

Just need to have an idea of where to go in said Jeep.

I have rented two 4x4s in Mexico. The Jeep we rented had the front driveshaft removed-which we did not know until we drove onto the beach, and promptly sank.

Same thing with the Rav 4 we rented...as they say in Mexico, cuidado!

Also-the contract on the 4x4s I rented specifically said they could not be used off road. Rental companies in Mexico are even sketchier than the small ones in the states, try to stick with name brand rental companies...bien vieja

gracias!

Sorry to piggy-back on your post here but I got bored a couple weeks ago and started this little F/Book page, for those of you in the South-West or in Baja. We've already got a small group trip planned for mid-February up to the Observatory in the San Pedero Martir mountains, then over to Puuerto Santo Tomas on the Pacific, then back up to my house here near Punta Banda. This is NOT a money making group I started, just an attempt at getting folks together down here now and again to talk story and sniff each other's rigs. We've got dirt roads and trails out the wazoo down here, plus my house is just a two minute walk to both the Pacific Ocean and the Estero (back bay) just ten crow miles south of Ensenada. We gots great restraunts, fishing, hiking, camping and some pretty good surf down here. Plus it's very kid and dog friendly as well. So please check it out if your so inclined......:D

They were doing that as far back as 1985 when I used to live there. It was a definite Tourist Beware trick they used to play on people.....:D

hey @Ricky B

you know any good guides that could take our family of 4 around for a day?

In Cabo? Not off the top of my head anymore----I kinda stopped going there about 25 years ago, unless I was sailing. But a real good 4x4 friend of mine probably has some contacts down there (he used to race the Baja 1000's....among other things). Gimme a couple/three hours and I'll letcha know.....:D

Sweet. Cheers,

Daniel had the same trouble as you're having right now a couple of years ago....and came up blank. But I did some digging around and found this for ya. Check out these ten different companies and then make some calls and maybe you can get hooked up with something/someone. Good luck and let us know what you ended up doing.....and take plenty of pics.....

Google "off the beaten path" for the cabo area, I found some interesting villages to seek out (along with some swimming holes), in fact google "swimming holes" near Cabo.

We rented a Jeep in Cabo last year and headed directly east on the coastal road. It's sand/dirt the whole way, and we passed many, many deserted beaches along the way. There is also a stretch of that road we all called the road of broken dreams. 100s of houses started in grand style and never finished and abandoned. It got weird, actually.

But at the National Park, just as you get to the Sea of cortez, is this unexpected gem of an outdoor restaurant, with fantastic food (the ceviche there is GREAT) that took all 4 of us by surprise. After dinner we drove back to Cabo on the main road with no issues. Had a great day of it.

I was selling real estate in Cabo back in '86/'87 and I'm pretty sure that abandoned housing thing you're talking about was supposed to be one of our new exclusive 'listings'. But for some reason our boss pretty much nixed it. Which may have been a great career move on his part.....
