I purchased a 1991 HZJ73 from a reputable chain dealership based in orange county with 5 locations, they did all the dmv paper work and i dont have to go to DMV at all, what are the chances of getting the CA title? Anyone know?

Pretty sure like many states a dealer in CA is legally responsible to provide you with a title within a certain number of days after payment is received. Follow up and let us know what happens.

I was thinking the same, just wouldn’t make sense for a dealer to sell a car they cant title and end up running into problems in regards to their dealer license. I’ll keep you updated though!

Any updates here ?

When you purchased the 73, did it have out of state plates? You mentioned the dealer did California DMV papers? And what were those documents?

I believe Legally you have the right to return the car to the seller if it does not pass smog In Cali.. not 100% sure but look into this.

It is not easy now a days to register a gray market diesel vehicle in Cali.

Best of Luck.

Any updates? Buying a JDM currently registered in Georgia that i'll need to register in California where l live. Curious if i'll have any issues.

I think I almost decided to buy this truck that you bought.

However, I backed off after a few exchange of call/texts with two different sales reps in mid-to-late May. They are quite clueless about JDM diesel land cruisers and CA diesel title/registration, but I don't blame them for not knowing as they are not specialists.

I hope it works out for you. It looked to me to be a clean truck on that dealership's medium resolution photos.

Name of dealer? Im looking into purchasing an import myself

Not looking good fellas. Will give more updates soon. Seems to really just be sheer luck with registration out here in Cali. Not so great to be a Californian when you want a diesel Land Cruiser. Bummer.

100% agree that they are clueless, still working things out but luckily I made a contract with them so if things don't work out I get all my money back but fingers still crossed for a successful registration although not looking so great. Guess I'll settle for an FJ62 haha.

I ran into a guy with JDM diesel Delica in LA the other day. Asked him how he was handling registration as I need to figure that out for my Hj61. He said he went to a Mitsubishi dealer and they gave him a emission sticker from a US Model Delica. He’s done his VIN inspection, but hasn’t made it to the DMV yet.

I didn’t get his info, but if I run into I’ll ask him how it went.

Having that sticker can help, but it's also a federal crime, so...

Bad news, as we’ve all been knowing but even given the circumstance of buying through a dealer, not possible to register in CA w out CARB compliance certificate, strong luck or constant trial and error. Dealer is willing to pay for CARB certification, will take about 8 weeks. Should i go for it? How will this procedure affect the vehicle?

Hell yeah go for it... After that it will be 100%!legit and on their dime... if it does not pass you have recourse to make them take the vehicle back and find one with ca reg already..my2c

Yes definitely go for it. I don't think they'll get it done, but let them try. It will be a great experiment. Then make them give you your money back, with interest, if they can't actually fulfill their contractual obligation to get you a title.
