Putting one of my off road rigs up for sale. I have had it about 7 years or so:
1973 FJ55 Toyota Land Cruiser
-V8 conversion, did have a 350 but it was overheating so I swapped in an ’86 305 with factory 4 barrel and H.E.I and it runs good
-Scout power steering conversion with hydraulic assist, had to do this, as apposed to the usual Saginaw due to the PTO winch, works great
-Set up for on board air with remote tank, but the compressor is shot, I have another to replace it with, just haven’t put it on there, and it will come with the vehicle. I may keep the tank though.
-Dual exhaust with 2 flow masters, sounds pretty mean.
-Axles are from a ’76 or ’77 FJ40 (can’t remember which) spring over with a couple of leaves removed and it flexes great.
Front axle: 5.29 gears/ lock rite/disk brakes/ warn premium lockouts/custom high
steer/stock birfs (but got a set of brand new newfields that will be included with sale, I think I have a spare lockout for the front as well)
Rear axle: 5.29 gears/ welded/ disk brake conversion/ warn full floater
conversion with drive slugs (not lockouts)/ has plates welded for torsion bar to the housing to reduce axle wrap but I’m not running one at the moment
-Here’s the good stuff! - Drive train is SM420 mated to the number 32 produced Rock Box by A.A. which is essentionally the adapter that allows the tranny to bolt to the factory transfer case with a reduction gear in it. The Rock Box also has a 1:1 straight through option also. The T-case also has A.A. twin stick conversion to get rid of the Toyota crap. Here is the numerical break down of all those components:
(7.05) X (3.44) X (2.31) X (5.29) = 296:1 final crawl ratio!
SM420 Rock Box stock T-case axle ratio
Your buddies will be bitchin at you to “catch another gear” cause they can’t creep the stuff that you can, consequently you end up at the back a lot, but it sure is fun!

-38.5 x 14.5 x15 TSL SXs on 18 bolt bead locks, the tires have been grooved and have good tread on them, but one of them is showing some separation cause they are old as dirt, might be time to replace them, especially if you are not going straight from the trailer to the trail.
- New parts I have put on the old girl over the years aren’t much but there are a couple: new clutch slave and master cylinder, new brake master cylinder, rubber brake lines, and just changed the oil. Only thing it needs is a battery (I have to swap a good one in when I wheel it) and perhaps a new front heater core as it leaks. You could just tie the hoses together that go to that heater to resolve the problem and use the rear one as it still works. This is a rare and cool vehicle, will climb like hell, and has 5 levers in the floor which is always the source of friend envy. That’s 2 for the T-case, 1 for the tranny, 1 for the Rock Box, and 1 for the PTO winch, which works great by the way.
The body has more than its fair share of rust but that is what makes it so great for the trail and yes I do have the front doors for it and a title for it. I’m sure there are things I have left out and can answer any questions you have, asking $5,500 thanks, Chris. 615-202-7891. Can also be viewed on Nashville Craigslist
