Good stuff.. bit $.. but hoping to only do this ONCE!!!

...and I'm an OEM kinda guy :grinpimp: Agreed!

OEM vs. AFTERMARKET

Well, you all DON'T EVEN wanna get me started...I'm such a lunatic about OEM, and despise AFT. Parts so badly...I'd postpone a needed rear brake job just to afford OEM over anything else. I've fallen for all the "GUARANTEED like OEM" QUALITY GUARANTEED,etc.... I understand this: There's a TON of money to be made marketing way cheaper aftermarket parts. Personally, I now just do without. Here's a couple experiences:

An old 1963 FJ40 i had:

Problem: Ugly original window regulator...too lazy to blast and paint it...so:
"Solution": (note the quotes) was to order inexpensive (that's kind for CHEAP) aftermarket for yours truly.
RESULT: The brand new aftermarket window regulator LITERALLY CRACKED (gears etc)...due to the high resistance in the window channel...shortly after install. I think that only in a brand new window channel with very little resistance would they have lasted. Closer inspection revealed their DIECAST (think hot wheel, mattel ,etc) metal construction. Ended up painting and putting the OEM (30+ year old part) back on!!!!

PROBLEM: OEM toyota door lock/regulator rattles cause its almost 30 years old!
"SOLUTION:": Gave the Quality guaranteed AFtermarket a shot...against my better judgement...but HEY, its $100 dollars CHEAPER!!!! right??? a PITA to put on too...
RESULT: After a few weeks or so, I got locked out my rig. Been fighting the door since...seems the springs in the cheap aftermarket ones (SOR, CCOT, they ALL CARRY THEM) are weak...there is nothing physically broken about it...they just plain SUCK...I'm going to sleeve and put my original back on...its actually better than the NEW AFT. ONE...seriously.

In short, I'd only CONSIDER using the COSMETIC stuff...like the reflectors for instance...that's it. Some things, you have NO CHOICE on (lift springs, etc). And other things, there is no TOYOTA OEM version of...

Finally, if anyone wants them, I have Aftermarket side mirror and reflector, and even a sending unit (that I'm AFRAID OF...really...as in SCARED...) that are FREE. I can't even stand to look in the ONE aftermarket mirror that CCOT gave me with an order...the poorly cut glass bothers me...I can see the cut glass sticking out the plastic...LMAO....I'm just gonna keep my old OEM ones until I get NEW OEM ones.....

WHEW! I'm threw venting...thanx guys...flame me later...I'm out...

Original Equipment Manufacturer
Glad you got your cruiser back, btw!

Those looms look like they might be easier to work with than the plastic ones, going to look pretty sharp too.

I saw your mirrors and agree.. OEM is the way to go for most everything. I have some AM emblems and they are pretty darn close to OEM... PLASTIC like the OEM (not sure what year that happened..lol). I'll spray them with something before I put em on so the will withstand some of the UV that Louisiana has to offer.

What does OEM stand for?

Original Equipment Manufacturer = Factory original part, bud.

I went fishing down at Butte La Rose - heard the bull bream were biting. I was going to pull the boat with the Cruiser but I don't have (or at least I dont see one) a wire harness to connect the trailer lights. I can strap a canoe to the top though and will this week just to take some pics!

And I was thinking about you boys when I was riding around in my LC these past few days. I realized I have a rear heater!!!! And it's warm too!!!! LOL. Of course I can't take the top off so I'll quit there.

And I've been looking for some things to torch on too. Plasma is better but the torch gets the job done. :D

I like that look...looks like a canoe would work fine on that cage...eh Marty?

Hey, if you all get a chance, check out this thread its pretty interesting...Meet "Gertrude"...

I found the link to his CENTER MOUNTED PTO interesting too.

Wow, very creative minded fella. Wouldn't have cut up a good 40 like that, but he obviously wheels the :censor: out of it. Good read, wow all that mud will give me nightmares of my younger days laying on the ground at the car wash in my rain suit washing the 40. :frown: The pitman indicator on the dash is wild. He must have watched alot of MacGyver.

Yep, I could still strap the canoe on there. All my fishing gear would just stick out the top too. That's nice. If I went to that extreme, I'd go ahead and mount a gun rack too for hunting season. I know my Lab would love that ride as well during duck season.

I had been hearing that they were biting. It was kind of slow yesterday but I figured that would be the case after a holiday weekend - especially in that canal with all those camps. The ones I did catch were nice! I may go back at the end of the week and try again b/c there's another front coming through on Friday so I bet they'll be on. I probably will take the canoe just because I want to see my LC with a canoe strapped on top! LOL.

Have any of you put a wiring harness on your Cruiser? Is it a no-brainer or what?

Well, I think a canoe is pretty practical for that too...I've been looking at one with a small trolling motor.

The wiring for hitch is simple. We can help you do that no problem.

The wiring is easy, but I wouldn't put anything on that hitch until you replace it. Wasn't it rusted through real bad? Thats odd that they had the hitch with no wiring, but we can fix that.

It looks solid enough to hold my little jon boat. I wouldn't want to pull much heavier anyway with that rebuilt tranny - not yet at least.

I've done some wiring work before on my old Z-71 so I should be able to do this but I'll call if I get in a bind.

Very cool... saw the first thread w/ the roll some time back and thought that must really hurt someone's soul.... Not his however. Just an excuse to do more modding.

The center winch is cool as hell. However if you're REALLY in a bind to re-run that thing to the rear knee deep in :censor: must be a pain in the :censor: . but...better than nothing!

Thanks
