Well a simple old bolt has just caused me to ruin my exhaust manifold so now everything has to come out and a new (used) one will have to go in, I'm use to this kind of stuff by now. Nothing ever goes as planned. If anyone has one lying around I could sure use it. I have a 71' Fj-40, 1F engine all stock. It crossed my mind that while I rip everything out I should replace the manifold with headers, any thoughts on this, will I gain anything by doing this? Thanks. J

Just weld a nut on the remains of the bolt and turn it out. No need to remove the manifold as long as you can get a welder on it. Works great.

I would try and weld a nut on it like pinhead said. I've done this a few times on different vehicles and only had one time where it didn't work and I needed a torch to carefully burn it out. That said I have had good luck with my Downey header. I don't know if it really makes all that much more power than stock as the truck had a rusty old header on it when I bought it. But it's much easier to change header collector gaskets under the truck than it is to change the 2 stupid little donuts between the manifold and exhaust on my 89 pickup. And I believe the stock manifold is kind of set up like my 89 is.

X2 - I've had good luck with this also. If it broke off down in there a bit you can find a good size fender washer and weld that to the broken bolt first then weld a nut to the washer. Woeks grear when dealing with a recess.

problem is its too late. I welded a nut on and broke the stud with just a little bit left. Plus the other side crack where the stud goes in so it a lost cause. Needs to be replaced. How hard of a job is this. I imaging just getting the old bolts out is the bulk of the work.
