Breathable Diff/T-case Filler Plug?

The breather for the 2004 4WD Rav4 is plugged causing pressure to build up in the t-case and blowing out gear oil at the driver side of the t-case. The breather is in a place making it impossible to service the breather without drooping the t-case.

My thought is to take the filler plug, drill a hole in it and mount a nipple to it and run a hose up to the engine bay and put a filter on it.

Is there a source for a breathable filler plugs or do I need to make one myself?
 
Hi All,

Take the fill plug to an industrial supply house that sells metric threaded barbed fittings. Find a size/thread match and you are good to go.

This is what I did to make an oil transfer line from the transmission to the t-case in my FJ40.

Hi Ron here I'm a first timer working a 71 40
My thought is that if its a VENT then air should pass through it pretty easy.
Have you taken the fill plug out and blasted air through the vent tube?
A bicycle brake cable would make a good "snake"
Correct me if I am wrong but to use the fill plug as a vent on Level ground would work but what about going Uphill?
Wont the oil block the vent?

I cant see the diff/t-case breath very much. The change in pressure is very little. I would think that its the expansion of the oil is what is causing pressure to go up. Even if there is gear oil blocking the filler plug vent then the oil would just get pushed up the hose till there is an equalization in the diff/t-case.

The question is, how long does the hose need to be so not to have oil pushed out the end of it?
Guess if it is a problem then you could put an expansion bottle on the end of the hose to catch the oil.

Any idea what the Toyota diff/t-case plug threads are? The drain and filler plugs on the 2004 Rav4 look to be the same as my 94 FZJ80.
