Does anyone know where I can get the 4runner calipers (circa 1993) to do the front disc brake upgrade on my FJ60? A lot of stores want the old calipers and add a core charge to you.

I saw some disc brakes on trail-gear.com but I'm not sure it they are the correct ones.

Napa said they won't sell them to me unless I bring in the old calipers...which I don't have.

Thanks to all of you that have done this upgrade and gave a writeup on it!

Can you use IFS calipers? Often mini truck owners on yotatech.com and ttora.com SAS their rigs and sell what you need.

They would need to be 1988 and later V6 IFS calipers only to get the four 40mm pistons...the 4cyl were not the larger piston on the IFS trucks.

These should not be that hard to procure....

Hit the FAQ, as there are many threads on this very topic.

Good luck!

The Marlin site doesn't say if their V6 IFS calipers are the 40mm piston calipers. Does anyone know if these are the right ones?

I'd call CDan and ask him.
There are the calipers for the 93 4Runners that require some grinding and some others for the earlier ones that have a slightly smaller piston, but supposedly dont require any mods.
I've heard Dan had the 411 on all of this, but I haven't asked hime personally as of yet.

I returned my LC cores after installing the 4rnr's and they never even asked.:)

I guess I could give it a shot...

It couldn't hurt, right??

I'm sure the parts guy isn't going to pull a set off the shelf & compare what he sold you to what you're bringing back as a core. As long as they look similar, I don't think you'll have a problem at all.

Yeah what he said.....................

the other thing you could do is call Mini Truck Dismantling down on Newton(under the Coronado Bridge) 619-233-3884

He almost always has that kinda stuff around........probably won't charge a core charge and if he does he'll probably take the LCs without a hassle....

but his stuff is used........the Napa stuff is reman

I went through this recently.

NAPA would accept the LC cores but the price they paid for them was a little lower than the 4Runner cores.

In the end, I just bought remanufactured calipers from CDan as the Toyota core charge was only $20. Note, however, that the Toyota calipers are not loaded so it works out about $50 a caliper more expensive than the NAPA route.

Another alternative I had lined up was to buy cores from a junkyard. I found cores for $25 a piece.

Just get the NAPA/whatever calipers, pay the core charge, and bring the old LC calipers back the next day. The guy behind the desk wont notice the difference if its even the same guy, and if he can discern some type of difference there is no way hes gonna care.

which Napa

must be a dozen or more

I bought my 4runner calipers at Auto Zone. They were only $80 for a pair of loaded calipers. Took back my cruiser ones for core. These have worked just fine for over a year.

i did the same, and cored my LC caliper's. the 17 year old girl behind the counter at kragen did not even ask, or know the difference for that matter. i used 1994 and they had several to choose from and mine were about $50 unloaded plus $30 for carbon metallic pads. works awesome and stops my 37's no sweat. i went with a T-100 m-cyl that i got from a guy parting out for $25. and while i was at it i did shoes and wheel cylinders out back also.
