Brainstorm session - rear bumper & tire carrier for 2010 4runner trail

I recently did a trade with a local welder, who is very talented. I'm trying to put together some design ideas for a rear bumper & tire carrier for him, taking cues from the FZJ80 Slee Bumper, Kaymar, Hanna and ARB...maybe I missed a few. One of the reasons I bought this thing was because of the great gas mileage for a 4x4, so I'm brainstorming about ways to save on weight without alot of compromise to strength, perhaps a place for a couple of jerry cans etc.

Suggestions and ideas ??

This image was stolen from yotatech.com someone went to the trouble of photoshopping a trail edition...I can't take any credit for any of it, but saw it and liked it.

Something that gets the tire up and out of the way like the pic above. I would also have him look at a jerry can mount beside the tire, but if you move the tire up and out, it would be better to make a side lying mount for a jerry can underneath the rig where the old spare was...you could probably fit two there. Other than rolling over something, this would be ideal for keeping weight low and out of the way for most accidents or incidents.

The other thought I had was a tubular bumper (like Marlin crawler bumpers) instead of a plate steel bumper. This would make it much lighter. I like how light this vehicle is and would not want to loose that. This is just a thought...but the plate protected bumper above is nice too...seems to flow with the current body panels.

I think on mine, I will be adding a prerunner style light bar and no dedicated front bumper...again, I was looking for something light but add a little bit of protection. Perhaps something that bolts to the frame or to the current aluminum bumper.

Glad to hear! I am wrapping up our skids now and shifting gears to the rear bumper project.
