I just installed a new to me speedometer in my 67'. However whenever i hit a bump which is quite often on the backroads wher i Live i seem to jump in speed by about 20 mph. I believe this is quite impossible so anyone have any idas on how to make it stop?
I used the grease that came with my new cable but it looked just like white grease. Be sure to wipe the cable clean before lubing it and make sure there aren't any sharp kinks in the cable housing, that'll cause bouncing too! When you install the cable make sure its seated in the speedo housing before you try to cram the cable end into the transfer case. You can twist the cable and feel it drop ionto the groove. You could also spin it to see if there is any movement on the speedo (might need another person for this to watch speedo). Good luck.
On my '79, the tenths wheel on the odometer hangs up, this broke the end off the worm so it doesn't engage the gear properly, I fixed it but did not realize at the time that the problem is in the odometer spool itself, now I have to go in again and first fix the odometer spool, then probably repair the odometer spool again.
On my '83, the odometer does not work either, I suspect the same problem but haven't looked into it yet.
I believe there has been at least one other thread on speedometer/odometer repair on mud.
Well I took the cable out from the TC and it looked ok as far as being intact and oiled. The piece that goes into the speedo is it suppoed to be perfectedly square and even on the end or is it supposed to be beveled? If not I guess I need a new one.
