hey all, hoping this is in the right CO club section.

anyways, I am planning on going up to Boulder to visit a friend in a couple months and my friends and I are thinking about making a road trip out of it. we are planning on going around early January or so; can yall comment on the weather or anything else around this time? can anyone comment on the public transportation in the city? and hows the skiing/snowboarding?

also, are there any light off road trails around there? i would like to make some runs up through the mountains and snow, but breaking something 1500 miles from home wouldn't be too exciting. anything i must do while I'm up there? anyone know how well the Toyo MTs perform in the snow? think I'll need chains?

Thanks a head of time, and i appreciate all information y'all can give me,
Cole

this will all be in my 100 series, btw

January is one of the coldest months of the year, so layer up. For skiing and boarding, Eldora is about 1/2 hour up from Boulder. It's a small resort, but has some fun stuff. I taught boarding there for 2 years. Summit County, Vail, Beaver Creek 1.5-2 hours away 6-7 good resorts. If you are coming to Breck I can tell you where to go. I've been teaching snowboarding at Breck for ten years now.

Heya! I live in Boulder... We have some trails open year-round down here, but you will be 100% out of luck for actual mountain wheeling in January. Hell, I got turned back in July this year due to snow!

Down here, we have Left Hand Canyon, Carnage (totally not suitable for a 100 that you don't want to break!), and probably some others.

But I'll go snowboarding with you, for sure. :)

Edit: I carry chains in the mountains, even for road driving. Not everyone does, but I like to be prepared, and they are way cheaper than snow tires for your road trip. Get real chains, not the cables, and practice fitting them at home where it's warm, instead of after you've piled it into a snowbank like I did the first time. ;)

Hmm. We might need to do a couple of club snowboard runs this winter. I'm planning to have a Loveland pass as usual...

Thanks for all the information and help guys. I'll probably have more questions as it gets closer to January

Cole,

How do you like those Toyo M/T's?

i love em. have them both on my 100 and 40. great road manners, fairly quiet for an MT, and so far excellent off road even though most of the stuff i have ran on is thick louisiana mud. i seem to do more things easier in my 100 than most jeeps around here, however, the trails i have ridden so far are not very technical or hard. for example: some other rigs might take 2-4 tries to get through a muddy wash or up a muddy hill and my 100 can pretty much be stopped in the same wash and pull right through no problem and take the same sloppy hills in less or the same amount of attempts. i am still very much learning how to drive well off road and my experience is not very vast. but so far they are a great tire, both on road and off. plus they look cool too

haha, im down, though i suck an boarding. i dont get too much time on the mountains down here in louisiana.

btw, thanks for the pm and i replied to it

Sno Bored,

Can you teach someone who pretty much sucks at boarding?
I teach lots of people who suck at snowboarding, that's my job. If you hit me up in the winter I'm sure we can work something out. My KAB pass is good at Breck, Keystone, A-basin, Vail, and Beaver Creek. I also get a Loveland pass. I hope one of those would work for you.

There are sections of Left Hand Canyon that are suitable for a modified 100 series if the trail is not snowy or icy. I have taken my 100 series up through LHC. However, I would consider turning the 100 around at the "Squeeze". There are still a few fun obstacles before that.

If you do not have an ARB in the front diff, then I would take it easy on the front wheel lifts since the front diff is prone to breakage. On the other hand, you can still drive home in rear wheel drive with the drive flanges removed. My 4-pinion diff broke rather easily.
