BOOM - Transmission or CV?

1998 LC, come to a stop sign, start to accelerate from stop then a LOUD thunk (thought I ran over something), then no gear engages and hear a loud whining type noise = in every gear. No gear engages including park. Did transmission blow or CV joint, or ?

Did you check under to see if the CV is still good? What about driveshafts or transfer case?

Maybe the center diff popped out of engagement (into neutral)........

C-Clip on the end of the CV. At least I hope it's that for you . . .

Good chance C clip or the CV stripped. Lock the T case and see if it moves. Check underneath with it in gear to see which CV is spinning.

I agree, I just did the wheel bearing service on mine at 160k and the splines on my cv and drive flange are almost gone! Looks like mine could strip out at anytime.

CV axle and cone replaced runs like new and .... no more THUNK out of the gates!
