First of all I must say that I am a STUPID MAN !
Was trying to change a light in the instrument cluster of my 78 , but I forgot to turn off the main key switch .
Turning the cluster I pressed the back blu electo pist to the car frame , and a acid smell of burnt reised .
After that all was dead
With exception of turning lights , and fuel tanks .
Speedo , water gauge, and all lights are dead .
Checked all fuse , they are ok
Do you guys know if there is some sort of ECU somewhere ???
Or shall I just hunt for a new / used cluster ?
I am pissed off with my self since a week .

Hello,

The 1HZ engine does not have an ECU.

The combination meter in 1999-2009 units is electronic. Does your odometer turn on? If so, you just burned the lights. Otherwise, chances are you shorted something in the electronics and you need a new meter.

Thanks Juanj for your reply .
In the 78 there are some ECU dedicated to some specific functions , as I suspected I had burnt the electronics for my speedometer.
Odometer doesn't turn on , all dead .
I must start looking for some thing now......
Second hand is Very difficult to find here in Europe .
Will start looking down in Australia or Ns.

Thanks Renago

Hello,

If I remember correctly, there is a 4WD ECU above the ashtray. There is also an emissions unit above the glove box.

Aside from the emissions unit, the 1HZ engine has no electronic controls. Thankfully, Toyota designed it to be easy to operate and repair, which means little, if any, electrics/electronics.

Before looking overseas, a visit to your local Toyota parts guy is in order. Some part numbers:

SPEEDOMETER ASSY: 83220-60830
GAUGE SUB-ASSY, FUEL RECEIVER, W(WATER TEMPERATURE GAGE=WIDE TYPE): 83882-6C150
GAUGE SUB-ASSY, W(SUB FUEL TANK GAUGE & WATER TEMPERATURE GAUGE=WIDE TYPE): 83882-6C160
COMPUTER, TOTAL COUNTER MODULE: 83293-60620

A competent parts person should be able to make you a quote using these part numbers.

Both the 4WD and emissions control units should have a part number stamped on them.

Thanks Juan
Super professional :flipoff2:, I will, ask to my Toyota dealer.

The strange thing is that all lights are off , speed gauges, odometer, and water temp.
But , the 2 fuel tanks gauges work , and also the direction lights.

Will start looking down in Australia

You wont find one like that down here. Ours have the tacho and battery gauge

Thats what I found out looking around on internet .
My next step is :
A maybe I can substitute ONLY the blue circuit , costs only aprox 50 €
B , see if the Australian version with tacho , battery gauge is compatible with my car ???
C , last chance order from mama Toyota , the OEM , but very €€€

Is there some place where I che check if the Australian version is compatible ?

good thing I am not in a hurry , for the moment .

Thanks to all for the preciuse help .

Bye Renago

You would need the rev counter sensor on the side of the injection pump for the tacho. Its probably cheaper and easier to buy aftermarket gear

in reality I have made a engine swap from HZ1 to HD-T .
so should probably find some thing around for the Tacho .
at present I am rather tight with cash .
so less I spend better it is .

bye Renago

Happy ending
Looking closely in the circuit board , I found 2 spots that burned up .
So just welded a thin wire Making a bridge .
Quite nervous to tell you the truth ,
Today Irefitted the instrument in it's place , and ALL worked fine ✅

Bye Renago

Would it be ok to have the back View of the Instrument Cluster.. It would really help me. Bought 78 series used LC 10 sitter but part of the Instrument Cluster is missing and I really wanna have a look to fix mine. Thanks..

At present all is working fine.
I don't see any chance in opening the instruments cluster any time soon , sorry .
