Took it in for a tune up today because it was running poorly, thought maybe it could be plug wires, fuel pump or something minor. Guy calls me back about two hours later with the bad news. HG failure at #2. Had the HG replaced in December along with timing chain. What have I done to deserve such luck? I wonder what could have caused it. I went from driving it 2-3K per month to less than five hundred and this is what I get. I think I'll get trashed tonight. If anyone in Round Rock Texas wants to have a beer or 20, let me know.

Man, that stinks.

Did you do the work yourself, or did you hire out? If you hired out, any chance the hired-gun messed up? Was the head shaved/cleaned up?

Had a local shop do the work. I guess something was missed or messed up. Maybe the head wasn't done correctly or the head wasn't bolted with the right torque. I called the shop that did the work and he said he would "take care of it". No talk about money but i assume he meant for free. I hope there wasn't any damage to the engine. Anything I should have them do "while they are in there"? I'll keep ya'll posted.

That really stinks.

My bet on my own HG: I'm going to run the fawker till it blows and while everything is apart, rebuild the whole thing at the same time.

That really stinks--and I guess you are in the same boat as IDoug who had his blow again after PMing it.

Doug did not lose a replacement gasket.

My bad gents...memory of threads is getting worse with age.

Edited previous response.

Man, you guys are good.

If age is getting to you I'm hosed...........:flipoff2:

Beno is just a young pup, who likes to play. His memory does not lack. He just does not sleep. My problem I do all the above and I am a whole bunch older.

With that said, HG do scare me but I am just like Mr. Beno I will run until it pukes.

Hey now....I get some sleep--just not enough.

Last night.....3.5 hours, then I woke up in a cold sweat thinking that there was some wrenching to do on my rig!!

:flipoff2: ;)

Man, that blows big time. Was the shop familiar with LC's and the HG problems? Did the other one fail, or was it just PM on your part?

It was done by some cruiserheads here in town. Really good people and i will be a customer for as long as i own a cruiser. I think it was the first HG they have replaced and they are more used to working on 40's and 60's. They are really good at fabricating and doing more of the rock crawling and hardcore offroading. They don't have much experience with the 80 yet. Only because there hasn't been many come in because of the reliability. I hadn't even checked the coolant or anything regarding the HG because it was replaced not so long ago. However, I did notice some coolant usage on tuesday after i noticed it was running bad but thought it might be a small leak. It was about a half gallon low since the initial repair and i had driven about 10K miles, didn't think much of it. The shop was not familiar with the HG problem and that might have a lot to do with it.

Can you verify if they used a factory Toyota HG ($) or did they use an aftermarket (much cheaper)? Would be a nice data point. Also, be advised you may/will get THEIR explanation of what went wrong, versus "Whups, looks like we forgot to torque the head down" type stuff.

I have the invoice in front of me and it says "R & R head gasket, timing chain & gear set, seals, oil pan gasket, water pump, belts, tune up" 18 hours labor and parts. The R & R part scares me now. I have never noticed that part before and was an ass for assuming they would use OEM. I wanted to order the parts myself but they said they wouldn't warranty the labor unless they ordered the parts for the work being done. The markup on the parts helps cover the warranty. I pm'd cd a while back because i wanted to go through him for the parts but didn't do it because of the warranty on the labor. I will not make that mistake this time.

that's too bad. #2 is an odd spot to lose it. you didn't overheat when you were down on coolant did you?

hopefully i'm not about to join you... pressure testing tomorrow.

didn't overheat at all. I even ran it a little harder than normal because i thought it was like my bike when it gets a little garbage in the carb from bad gas. That is what it ran like. So I actually had it over 3K RPM's for the first time since the HG was replaced. I hope i didn't do more damage by doing that, but frustration set in and at the time it seemed like it might help. Another mistake by me. You would think that me reading this forum for over a year it would help but i guess not.

Alan- sorry to hear of your 2nd HG failure. "R&R head gasket" = "Remove and Replace head gasket", it's not the brand of the gasket. You should call the shop and ask them for that. If they say it is OEM, get the part # from them and post it here.

thanks alaska, i thought it was the brand name of an aftermarket hg. i'll be in touch with the shop tomorrow and get some things figured out. I'll also be out of town all weekend so if ya'll don't hear from me, I'll be in touch.
