Finning is what we have locally for analysis, so hopefully this can be used comparatively to Blackstone.
First oil analysis at 319000 km.
I've been changing oil for the last 3 years at average of 7400 km (4500 miles) with Costco/Kirkland 5w30 and Toyota filter.

LarryAnalysis.jpg

I got busy and went longer than I planned to for this change (9730 km / 6045 miles). Iron and Aluminum up a bit (from the longer interval?) .
With two good results in a row, I will probably only sample once a year going forward.

Apologies for long post. Glad first report came back good.

1. Damage/Neglect:

Overheated, car was smoking and had burnt rubber smell back in 2007 at 177,145 miles with previous (original owner). They Towed in immediately to Lexus per record notes. Cause was thermostat not opening. Thermostat and gasket changed then.
Car since has been driven 114,000 miles in 17 years. 230k miles first 13 years. 60 k miles last 11 years.
2. Motor Oil/Filter: Toyota 5W-30 conventional, Toyota Filter 90915-YZZD3
3. Change interval: 6 months/ 1754 miles (2800km) Up here in cold Canada. Summer can still reach 100F also.

Will do transmission oil and AHC test with Blackstone labs next. Had no idea one could do AHC also. (still on original globes and struts for 25 years). I’ve changed fluid and others have before too several times for both ATF and AHC. I also brought pressures within spec with tech stream.

I changed oil for first time since buying car in September 2023. Didn’t want to do test on previous owners low dirty oil. Was worried car was burning oil but so far on my two oil changes it hasn’t burnt any. Remains at perfect F mark.

Used Toyota/ Lexus conventional 5W-30 for first oil change in September 2023. Sent this Toyota Lexus conventional one in 6 months later to Blackstone labs in March 2024. Also at 4 month mark on this test oil I added in BG 44K fuel cleaner but via fuel tank NOT engine oil route. So that may have been left a bit in engine oil. Not sure.

Changed it out 6 months later to Castrol GTX ULTRACLEAN Conventional 5W-30 this March and that is what is currently now in car instead of the Toyota 5w-30 conventional.

Some history. Apologies for long post:
Bought August 2023. Saw previous owner engine oil was low and dirty. No idea if he used synthetic or conventional. I put in Toyota/ Lexus conventional 5W-30 and for now wanted to stick to 6 month intervals or 3k miles per The Car Care Nut and other Toyota Japan experts. No rust and had 17 years of Lexus records and then some other records for 7 years. Called Lexus and other shops and they couldn’t tell if they used synthetic or conventional per their notes. So to be safe and not wanting leaks as I right away had to deal with an alternator replacement on first drive as cars and bids and owner lied. Died on first drive and brake master was leaking too as it came off transport truck. Also they weren’t truthful
there. Got some money back from auction. So had expensive repairs in first week and wanted to avoid synthetic thinner oil switch with possible leaks.

May switch to synthetic pennzoil ultra platinum or amsoil but not sure. If I’m changing every 6 months conventional will probably be fine too if getting good lab numbers.

Planning on sticking to 6 months interval per The Car Care Nut and Toyota Japan experts advice. I know Blackstone labs wants me to try to do around 6000 miles like the average they get but I’m bit worried about doing that for science or curiosity of what wear levels will be at higher intervals lol.

I also use 91 or 93 octane fuel since getting this. 91 stated in manual and fuel door but I also realized after cleaning MAF, throttle body and fixing AHC pressures in tech stream I’m getting 21 mpg on highway (all stock) on 93 octane shell or 20mpg highway on 91 octane shell. Horse power definitely goes up. Sure bit more expensive but also getting 3-4 mpg more than 87. We don’t have 89 octane where I am. Previous owner used 89 for three years and also towed and through out AHC pressures.
I checked mpg three different ways and same mpg numbers each time. Even via obd scanner and via tech stream. I think this oldie deserves good stuff this late in the game especially since once overheated with previous owner in 2007. Fuel injectors and other areas look clean and good fuel/ high octane can help with that. Want to keep it going.

Don’t mind the cost of doing twice a year as it’s around $40 with filter for me in Canada. If I switch to synthetic it’s around $50 for even ultra platinum pennzoil or similar. Do myself and don’t mind the twice a year even though this could probably go longer. I max would ever do maybe 2-3k miles in 6 months. But usually more like 2k miles max in 6 months. So interval of 6 months will come first usually. Longest interval I’ll go is one year…maybe haha. I have on my newer RX350 but now will start doing 6-8 months on that too.

Glad things came back good on the first test considering that it had been used for towing for last three years by previous (second) owner and that it had overheated once in 2007 with original owner.

Could you explain how you send to this company for analysis? I live in Canada and saw their site but can’t figure out instructions to send to them. Is it only for industry people?
I have done Blackstone labs for my 100 series and RX350 but wouldn’t mind doing within Canada for ease of shipping if prices and process isn’t too bad for the testing. Thx.

Damn, @WanderingWarrior 20mpg is mighty excellent for 290k 100 series. You in Colorado? I'm at 270k and just had the heads rebuilt due to blown spark plug. I've done everything I can think of - cleaned MAF, cleaned TB, new plugs, new injectors, new charcoal canister, new coil packs. I'm sitting at 11.5 to 12.5mpg. About to change my diffs and transfer which are overdue.

But do you have any tips - any maintenance that gave you a noticeable bump - since you're running at 20mpg!!??

One buys a pre-paid sample kit at the local Finning Office (Find Your Branch - https://www.finning.com/en_CA/contact/branch-locator.html) or Toromont if you are in, or east of, Manitoba (All Branches - Toromont Cat Locations - https://www.toromontcat.com/all-branches). The kit consists of a sample bottle, plastic container to prevent leaks, and a barcoded label where you fill in all your information. It was about 28 dollars for my last kit You don't need an account, so anyone can pick them up.
You take the kit home, take your sample, then drop it off - they will email the results. We have a Finning branch about 20 minutes from us, so it was really easy for me.
If you don't have a local office, you can probably mail it directly to the lab (Edmonton for Finning) - Just call the 1-800 number and they should clear it up for you.

Assuming your rig is the one in your avatar, a significant hit to MPG would be due to the mods: large AT tires, (lifted?), bumper, roof rack / roof cargo.

Mine is completely stock with Michelin Defenders inflated to spec. I haven't seen 21, but I can get 18 on the highway easily by accelerating like an old lady and never pushing over 72 MPH.

Hey. I’m in Toronto, Canada area. So my vehicle is completely stock. 16 inch wheels with stock size tires for summer and winter. Have no roof rails or rack. I have no mods. I basically drive 65mph-70mph max on highway. That helps also. In Canada where I am we have a ton of cops on highway and our speed limit is 60mph so for gas mileage also I rarely go higher than 70mph. I did do rislone fuel & catalytic cleaner and BG 44k fuel injector/ fuel cleaner additive via fuel tank within last 8 months AFTER putting in new alternator, cleaning MAF, throttle body and bringing AHC pressures in line on tech stream as I have AHC hydraulic suspension on my 99 LX. Before fuel cleaners additives I was getting about 18.5/19 mpg on highway. After it shot up to 20/21 mpg on highway on 91 octane and 93 octane. My RX350 also improved in mpg as I did BG44k cleaner in it also. I never tried 93 gas octane until after fuel cleaner additive and was in for a nice surprise. Sure cost bit more but also cleans the engine nicely and I get about 1mpg more.

Oh also have one third row seat out but three heavy child car seats in there. Even with my 3 year old and 2 year old, and 10 month old and my wife and a 85 lb husky and the heavy car seats I get that mileage. I actually have never tested long highway mileage without the family. Maybe it goes up a bit more with less weight. But ya I think key is stock vehicle.

Yup I have completely stock vehicle with stock wheels, tires, AHC pressures in spec and no roof rack rails and cleaned throttle body/ maf/ fuel injectors etc. And drive 65mph-70mph max due to our speed limit here in my area in Canada, tons of cops on hwy and I like the savings which of course I use up on the 91 and 93 octane shell gas lol. But yup stock def helps me get the 20/21mpg.

Thanks so basically same process as Blackstone labs. I just am in Toronto area and don’t know if this company has offices within an hour or so of me here on east coast. Maybe I’ll call them. I’d save like $10-20 compared to sending to Blackstone but so far I like the online interface and tracking of my info on the BSL website.

Report for my 2002 LC. New to me as of 6 months ago. This is the second oil change; I forgot to get a report on the first one (too focused on doing all fluid changes).
1) Damage - none known
2) Oil: M1 synthetic 5W-30, Uncle T Filter
3) 4000 miles on this one. Wanted to get a sample out for a baseline report. I'll probably do 5000 going forward.

copper content is high, which is interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Moly is also a bit high. That's an alloying element in things like connecting rods and structural parts.

Mine has been showing the same Copper content. Not sure what to think of it. Im at 270k miles it hasnt gotten better or worse.

Yeah, same here. I'm not going to worry too much as long as it's not drastically increasing at each change.

I did do valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, and a bunch of PCV hoses and vacuum hoses and stuff while on this oil, so we'll see if it flushes out of changes on the next one.

Transmission fluid test report Above I posted my good oil change report. Couple months ago forgot to post my transmission fluid test results. All good on this 1999 LX trans also. I also just changed it out with 4 drain and fills with Toyota Dexron 3 after getting good report because we didn't know how long last fluid was in there, we think 20k miles and think valvoline maxlife MV one and I know last owner towed for 2 years of his 20k mile ownership. Probably why slightly higher iron levels. But glad fluid was still in great shape. Now much of it’s been removed over 6 weeks via 4 drain and fills BUT a will do proper cooler line exchange of all 12 liters or so in there next year. Wanted to approach it still nice and gently with 4 drain and fills first since things are already good and should lower the iron content. Replaced about 4 liters each time.

Did another test two years and 25k miles later on my 2001.

I GUESS I can go longer than the 5k, but like, still cant bring myself to do it.

1. Damage/Neglect: none that I know of
2. Motor Oil/Filter: unknown 5w-20 oil and filter
3. Change interval: 5.2k miles

Have had this 2007 Cruiser for a few months now. Going forward, I'll be using AMSOIL w/ Toyota OEM filters. Next change will be 1yr/7k miles.

1726068014577.png

I sent my oil in to Blackstone after three or four sequential oil changes, during which I was curious to see just how far out I could extend the oil change interval, but after taking it to 12k-13k miles (with Mo1 5w30, mostly commuting under 10 miles) I saw that the UZJ was so easy on oil that I just didn't need to worry about it.

The last few years, I do an oil/filter change every fall with M1 5w30, and do an oil drain/fill in spring with M1 10w30.
