I have been thinking alot about doing that. Never herd any talk of it!

Anyone using waste engine oil as fuel?

Experiences please...

Yes I have run black diesel and plan to continue to run it when I have extra oil I need to dispose of. I filter the oil down to .5 micron and do a 50/50 mix with diesel. Works fine you have to play with the mix ratio to get the best results (least amount of smoke).

PS - Black diesel is illegal to run in the USA in registered vechicles only good for running generators and farm equipement - technically.

Cheers,

Michael

Micheal what are you using to filter the oil down to .5 micron? Is it a circ. system with pump or just gravity drain into a filter? Curious.
Also how does synthetic work or do you have to stay with the dino juice.

Nice point here... how about the synthetic ?

The reason that black diesel is unlawful in the USA is that the oil is laden with all sorts of nasty stuff you don't want to breathe.

Personally, I'd rather burn cleaner than dirtier.... veggie oil is a better solution than motor oil.

But to each his own, right?

Hey dude .. how about the progress of veggie oil in CR . ? ( I suppose the price are really high over there )

I can actually buy veggie oil for almost the same price as diesel now.... around 70 cents/ liter more or less.

I can also get used oil for free from a friend's restaurant. so I'm installing a heated filter next weekend to start running it. Just need another tank now.

liter = 3.3 gal right .. ?

2.10 US diesel gal, is not bad .. here go over 2.80 tomorrow.

1 US gallon is about 3.7 liters. Here in Guate we're at Q20.49/gallon, that's about $2.80.

How do you filter it - have been unable to source a 1/2 micron filter - the finest I can get is 5 micron...

I am using a wicking oil filter you can find a bunch of places if you look up wicking oil filter in yahoo. Here is one place I found that sell them (I think I might have got it from this place). I have made black diesel from my used motor oil, axle oil. So far I have made 30 gallons of the stuff and ran it with a 70/30 mix (70% oil) in my 86' BJ70. The truck runs great on it, no smoke wich is the first thing I though I will see. Mileage is a little less but ran great on it

Here is the web site to buy the filter:

I just told all my co workers, I want there used oil, I was also givin a couple plastic drums, one for clean and one for dirty oil. I would like to know as much about your set up as possible. Paying 1500 for that one seems a little much, although I bet it work amazing, do you think the used oil when processed correctly burns as clean as diesel?

Update:

Have started running a 50/50 mix, filtered to 10 microns.

It's a bit harder to start in the mornings, esp if below 20c (summer here currently). Runs OK, a bit smoky - can definately smell 'used oil'.

This is based on 3 weeks running so far.

I plan to fit a heat exchanger to heat the fuel - from my reading this should fix the smoke as the fuel will be thinner and atomise better.

"the used oil when processed correctly burns as clean as diesel?"

No, it contains cancerous pollutants which shouldn't be spewed into the atmosphere.

it was a question not a comment.

I didn't think so either, but you don't think billions of cars start up every day spewing chemicals into the atmoshpere, even a clean burning car, I wouldn't want running closed in a garage, not to mention all the oil burning cars, two stroke sleds, quads, dirtbikes. It amazes me we live as long as we do. It's a good thing we have trees to clean the junk out of the air, how about we start cutting them down to burn and have paper. Aww what an idea!

Not worth it to me!

Final update.

It worked well - for about 4 tankfuls.

I was testing using a mitsi diesel 4D56 (indirect injection).

After 4 tanks of 50/50, I noticed a definate power loss and increase in fuel consumption.

I switched back to 100% diesel, and there was no improvement after 4 tanks.

I pulled the injectors, and there was a hard carbon crust at the bottom of the injector hole (with a small hole in the centre).
This was right at the end of the injector nozzles - the injectors had been forcing the diesel through this crust, causing poor atomisation (there had been 'unburnt diesl' smoke coming out the back).

Probably caused by the 50/50 being too think to atomise properly - and I possibly could get around it by fitting a heat exchanger and a two-tank system - but I'm going to leave it and stay on diesel. It's my work vehicle and I can't afford to have these problems with it :(

It's possible this problem would not occur on a direct injection motor due to the different burn charicteristics - and lack of precombustion chambers to trap the carbon.

Since removing the crust I'm getting the normal performance/economy again :)
