hello,

Just wondering if anyone knows where/if the diesel
water seperator is on the 13-BT fuel system? Pretty sure
it's called a water sedimenter. The maintanence schedule
states this should be drained each service.

Anyone out there got any ideas????

It's on the right side of the engine compartment next to the power steering fluid reservoir. It's located between the fuel tank and the fuel pump in the fuel circuit. "Draining" it is next to impossible, there's virtually no clearance under the unit to drain it, unless you don't mind letting it run down over the fender well and wiring harness. The simple method is to disconnect the sensor plug, remove the sensor, and then evacuate the sedimenter with a turkey baster. Refill the reservoir with clean fuel, and re-install the sensor. It can be seen to the left in this poor photo.

thanks john,

I was looking round under the bonnet yesterday and saw it and wondered what it was. Is it necesary draining or should I wait until I see the filter light on in the dash? Is this something I should worry about doing? Sorry for all the questions but I have been servicing the cruiser myself and don't want to miss anything.

Thanks for helping out.

Gav

In my experience when you see the light it's too late and usually at an inconvenient place and time.

Not a cause for worry, just part of normal routine maintenance. I usually empty the sedimenter in the fall before freeze up, in the driveway where it's a lot more convenient than at the side of the road at minus 30.

Glad to help; you've got one of the very best cruiser models ever made. The vehicle of choice for Afghan warlords. Treat it right and it will outlive you.

Thanks John,

Great info mate. I'll get onto it on the weekend. I've had the cruiser for 10 months and not sure when it was last done. Your right about them being an awesome rig. Love the BJ74. Jap import.

Thanks again.

Gav.

black crud in separator

I checked my water/sediment separator (beside the air cleaner on a BJ74). No water found, but I did find some black crud -- sort of a gelled congealed black dirt. This may have accumulate over a long time - as this is the first time I have checked this thing (easy to do),

Any guesses where this is from - normal diesel fuel sediment or crap from my fuel system? I change my fuel filter every 10,000 km or every year.

Hi John,

Thanks for your info mate, it made the job heaps easier. I replaced the fuel filter at the same time so the engine should be getting nice clean fuel.

Heres what came ou of the sedimenter.

Some brown gunk and black crusties as well as a bit of water but mainly diesel.

Here is one of the BJ74. Used to think it was a 73 but I'm pretty sure is a 74 even tho the rego says is 73. Its a Jap import so somewhere along the line there could have been a mistake. Did the Jap 73 come with factory turbo and PTO?

nope, the BJ73 is the non-turbo version.
the first 4 digits of the serial number will tell you the facts...
(5 digits on most models after 1990)
