Good info, thanks!

My a/c system has no refrigerant in it at all. I ran a bypass wire to magnetic clutch as Ozcruiser did; clutch works.

Do I now get R134 retrofit kit?

That would be less expensive than buying R12, if you can find it.

I ran the compressor connected to a very good (and borrowed) gauge manifold.

While compressing air, the highest pressure shown was 30psi.

Should I use bubble-making leak finder stuff and run compressor some more to look for leaks?

Any compressor a known swap for this late '88 BJ74? I checked EPC and did not see a compressor/pn from this era.

88320-01011-84 will work. That will be less clutch. 24v clutches are not available over here.

Thanks Dan!
24V clutch seems fine and I even have an auto electric guy who says he could probably repair it if faulty.

Any thoughts or experiences concerning R134 refrigerant?
I'm trying to decide between a rebuilt or new compressor; I've read the R134 is hard on compressors.

Hate to revive a thread but I also don’t want to start a new one. When refilling my Freon what is the best type to use? R12 or???
Thank you!

I stumbled across a shop that somehow filled mine with R12. I think they recover it from other vehicles and use it later.
I would bet anyone hoarding or using R12 in California would be put to death in a solar-powered electric chair.

Ha. The funny thing is they’d probably send me a bill for that death. California is a s*** hole. I’m trying to move to Waco and attend Baylor. Anyway what would be the best substitution for R12? R134a right?

R134 conversion is the preferred method if R12 is not available.

The o-rings need to be replaced and a different oil is needed for the compressor.

That sounds quite challenging. Also sounds like something I’m gonna have to pay someone to do. For the mean time I think I’ll be content with having a fan. Thanks for the insight Dan. Much appreciated

Hello,

That is a wise thing to do.

The local shop subcontracts A/C work. A while back, they recommended going this way for Chance. I followed their advice and never looked back.

Juan

I recall that there are several types of system oil used depending on refrigerant...at least one of these oils works with R12 and R134.
A shop would be able to flush the system of old oil, install o rings, pull vacuum then fill with R134.

Does anyone have the part number to the ac compressor wiring harness? put a new compressor in yesterday but found out that the wiring fronm the AC compressor is no good

The part number will be of no use to you as it has been discontinued for years. You will have to repair the existing wiring or hand-build a new harness.

Thanks Dan! Would you happen to have the wiring diagram for the AC system ?
