BJ74 3'' Exhaust

What's the purpose of the section of flex pipe? I'm getting my exhaust done right now on my BJ74 and the guy told me it doesn't need to be there and he'd just cut it out if it were his.... Thoughts?

Ah. Looks like I figured it out... Sounds like the exhaust may rattle apart without that flex in there. I'm having my exhaust guy put in a flex piece.

Yeah, the motor moves etc so some movement is needed. Done mine a little different, it is rigid mounted to the gearbox to the rear of the transfercase, then a flex joint with the remaining section on factory rubber mounts out to the rear, mine runs inside the chassis rail.

The elbow on my downpipe is slowly disappearing.

Has anyone come up with a way of protecting the downpipe so it doesn't get like that?

Be nice to have that inside the frame rails. Building sliders would be way easier
