Hello Everybody, i live in California and bought my first 1984 Bj73, man i love this truck, it's a great driving experience. i need some advice/tips from you guys, thank you in advance!

1) Those who live in the US, where do you get you oil filters/air filters from?
2) what engine oil do you use? and how many quarts does it take?
3) Registration, i know i live in California and it sucks, but is it possible to get it register without getting a damn letter from Toyota?? or am i better off getting it register out of state? mines is originally titled in Washington, but i was turn down at my local DMV due to not having a damn sticker stating it meets federal safety or some bullcrap.

i really appreciate your help thanks in advance

i'll upload some pics of may baby later on

They will take any good quality diesel oil. 3B workshop manuals are available free with a search on google. The air filters are the same as US FJ62 FJ80 .
Oil filter part number 15600-41010 . Put it into google and see what you get. They are very common

I can tell you right now you will never get any kind of document from Toyota. They don't want them in any market they were not originally sold in.

You shouldn't need anything from them anyway. I know CA is hard (if not impossible) for registering foreign market cars. There are entire threads on just that topic over in the "Importing" forum. Honestly, if you have the option to register it in another state, well, maybe you should consider it. Just sayin'

BTW, it's not bullcrap, it's the law. (Sorry, had to say that).

Because your car is over 25 years old, it is exempt from Federal safety standards. You get yourself an NHTSA form HS-7 (available online), and check the box (box #1, I believe) that says your car is over 25 years old. Voila! You now have a car that conforms to Federal safety standards (because it's exempt from m them). You'll need the manufacture date (search Toyodiy with the VIN numbe), too. This is all the Federal government needs to certify that your car is compliant. Whether the CA DMV will care or not I couldn't say, but the Feds will be happy.

Just another note: If the car was previously registered in the USA, an HS-7 must already exist for it. You might ask the previous owner if they have a copy. If not them, whoever imported it has to have filed one, or they couldn't have gotten it into the USA (at least not legally, anyway).

I found the HS-7 form but it's asking me all this info that i honestly do not know about such as port of entry and date importer, am the 3rd owner and the guy who i bought it from has no idea on that info..is there a way i can find that info anywhere? thank you

If the previous owner doesn't have a copy of the HS-7, you'll either need to find the person who actually imported it (was it a company or an individual?), or contact the NHTSA or US Customs to see if they have one on file. Note that you might want to be cautious calling the US government about the car unless you know for absolute certain that it's in the country legally. No need to open that can of worms.

As previously mentioned, there are entire threads in the "importing" section of 'Mud that deal exclusively with registering foreign market cars in California. I highly recommend you read them all. Questions about registration would better be asked there anyway, as this is a tech forum.
