Guys:

I have a 1985 BJ70 I've restored about 95%. I've posted pics of my restore several months ago.

I've got a problem I need some advice on. Recently I tried to tighten the screws that holds the plastic halves together around the steering column. It was vibrating so I thought I'd stop it. When I tightened the center screw 1 turn.....smoke started coming out of the shell! After taking it apart and investigating, I found the screw was too long (wrong one I guess) and screws into the black wire with a red strip on it that goes to the ignition. This shorted it and it. It is damaged but not severed. The ignition starter is dead, horn and lights still work. all fuses and circuit breakers are good. fuse on battery still good.

What else should I look for? I really don't want to have to tow it to shop to get it fixed. Take a look at the pic.

contact me at randyriggs@mac.com

Thanks

Randy

Fusible links at the battery would be the first place to look. Check them carefully - use a test light or something similar.

check fuseable link

You were right! The yellow wire on the link was blown. Now, where can I get a new one or fabricate something to work?
Thanks

NAPA sells fusible wire. Take in the old wire and compare size to what they stock.
