Which relay is it...the main or secondary. If it is the secondary, use the main and install the Wilson switch. Or, simply get an aftermarket HD relay, and activate it from a push button on the dash.

good advice, also change out your glow plugs to ones that came with the manual glow system so you don't burn them out should you hold the button on too long.
another trick is to glow enough to start then hold them on as the engine is running till the engine runs smooth. as long as there is air movment then the plugs shoudln't burn out...
cheers

If you leave the resistor there I think it would be fine with the stock 6v plugs. But change over to the 10.5v plug after they die.

OK. Thread revival... BrownBear, you said: "But change over to the 10.5v plug after they die." The poor performance of the plugs has been fine during the summer, but as the cold mornings approach I'm calling their death as today. What company do people reccomend as a replacement?

See the FAQ in the diesel section for glowplug threads. I bought NGK. 20 each from NAPA> toyota wants wwaaay too much.

I have a 1985 BJ60 that is hard to start. I have put new glow plugs in but this has not helped. I have put a mutimeter across the glow plugs and there is no voltage. Can anyone tell me where the relay/s are located?

It looks like I found the relays, they are hidden in the guard behind the battery.
now all I have to do is fault find and see what is not working and replace
