Bikersmurf, I think the owner is asking $1500 so your right on the money. I have my hands full with old rusty, I am trying to put out some fires and then I can start to focus on purchasing the parts I need. This will take time and buckets of cash, all in good time I suppose.

So I finally got the tub off, fuel tank is out and it's in very good condition. She is back in the garage and waiting for me to get back next week from work. Next stage is to pull the engine and dash components and to get her down to a bare frame so it can be sand blasted

$1500 is a real bargain for that 45… I'd buy it, but I've got no use for it, no space, and no time to build it.

It would't surprise me if you could get it for $1000 if you arrived with cash. The one odd thing is that it's missing the FF rear axle.

It's a hard one to see I think it's actually all there but I can ask my friend. My wife would shoot me dead if I even looked at it ha ha!

So lots of work done today, wiring harness pulled back and labelled, most of the brake and steering lines removed, front cowl is loose, tomorrow I should get it off and aside and be able to pull the engine and drive train. Radiator has a crack in the tank, no surprise there as this is going from bad to worse.

Engine looks like it been leaking for years, I will scrape it down pressure wash it and put it on the engine stand for later.
My goal is to get the frame to the sandblaster this week before info back to work. It should be done by next week, then I'll repair any flaws and galvanize it or por15 it I haven't decided. I'll post more pics tomorrow

So I have the frame stripped, loaded and ready for sandblasting. I also bought a gasket set from Toyota today for $550 and two new side mirrors for $55 each. (Gasket set is highway robbery but oh well.) oh and get this the piston rings are $650 and pistons are $1000 for 4 of them. I don't know who prices things out at Toyota but let's get real here.
The frame is solid but the back frame rails are gone and I will have to replace about 8 to 10" of the frame. Also the the rear cross rail is absolutely rusted out and total junk.

Nice to see another BJ42 on here from the island. Looking forward to seeing more of your build!

Congrats on tackling this 42! Defenetly saving this one! You wont regret a new windshield frame and side panel. By the time I finished repairing my tub i was 1500$ short of getting a new one..... plus the hours.

Where is that 45 located? I'd be interested!

Great to see another 42 saved ! get a can of anti seize for all those bolts you will reattach.
Gozzard makes an excellent fibreglass top but why not wait and put a soft top on it until a good steel one comes up ?
I have been down the rebuild road with my 42 and 45, the 45 was hot dipped galvanized, but make sure all the welding is done before.
I have friends up the road from you in Nanoose bay with a cruiser, awesome peeps !
'Gas tank ' you may want to fibreglass it at a shop or not but when reintalling the tank I used stainless threaded rod about 20 inches long then when the tank was snugged back in place I cut the remaining length of rod off. I had tried with short rods and could not install the tank.
Now may be the right time to replace or relocate your water separator.(with a Racor) Check the corrosion factor on your air reservoir mounted beside on the ds frame. If rusted a friend of mine got a plastic one from a VW that he put under hood that worked just fine. In a pinch if your vaccuum reservoir does get a rust hole you can just connect the two rubber lines together and still have braking power.

Great work !

Thanks for the input guys, yes I will omit the frame sediment filter and relocate a Racor to the fire wall. I had to scratch my head for a bit to decide what the little tank was next to it. I finally traced the lines and decided it was a vacuum tank. It looks ok and I'm going to give it to the sandblast guy and hope for the best, otherwise I may fab one up out of stainless or aluminum.
It has been a bit of a downer here of late as I am pulling it apart and finding the full extent of the damage, but when I find replacement frame rail sections and rear spring hangers after market I get a little happier.
My immediate issue is the ebrake bell crank assemblies, one is working and the other literally crumbled in my hands. I am wondering if any of you know where to buy good quality aftermarket ebrake actuators? hoping for the best.
Also I am deciding to POR15 the frame, is this good or not? sandblaster guy will cold galvanize it for me if I want but I am not too sure on this. I would love to hear some input on this.

Ambrew, I think its located in a place called grassy plains just outside of Burns Lake BC. Owners name is Jerry Monkman, I will dig up a phone number if I get a chance.

Tub will be a new one from Aqualu when sufficient funds get tapped off the account without momma bear getting wind of it.
I have been looking for replacement windshield frames but haven't found a good one. Any suggestions? steel or aluminum? how is the fit? I have been pondering trying to repair mine but it would be a very big job.

ok so you have welding skills ! great ! I had built my reservoir out of stainless tubing and has been problem free for 10 years and counting. If you sand blast yours there may not be anything left or may weaken it and get you a shorter life out of the metal.
Galvanizing : I'm not sure what the 'cold' galvanizing is but when they Hot Dipped my frame it went through a series of tanks to descale, a series of large acid tanks with the final being the galvanizing.
Seems like a thorough process.

Cheers

cold galvanizing is painted and rolled on out of a can, apparently Navy uses it on their ships to prevent corrosion. I talked to him today and he said its $245 a gallon then he said I can put it on myself at his shop. super good guy who is going to sandblast the frame, all the skid plates, diff, and rad shroud for $300-350 so I am very happy with that. He will also sell me a 1/4 can of the galvanizing paint so that will cut down the cost.
I looked into acid dipping my frame and was quoted $1000 for the frame and $350 for each door with out any protection added or paint, that's why I'm going the sandblasting route. Frame will be done next week, so I will putter with the odds and sods in the mean time.

sandblasting and powder coat for my frame and bits (44 parts in all) was 1000$. They got it in everywhere and I'm happy. I figured it was about 350$ more than doing por15 with all the materials and such.

I did however por15 the axles, and they came out great. My only beef is that the 2nd coat never flows out as nice as the first one, leaving brush marks. I chose not to spray it due to the solvents involved.

My 2c says stick to what's been tested. Yes the navy might use it but as with many things, application process and conditions may be quite picky. Por 15 is pretty easy, hot dip galvanize is bomb proof as is a good powdercoat. good luck!

I found a pair of hardtop sides in better shape than mine, I only wanted to buy the RH side but as my luck would have it another potential buyer drove into the drive way while negotiations where going on and said that if I don't take them he would. This translates into paying full price and buying both. Yeesh!

I had some spare time today so I thought I would work on the bib, I had some 18ga. steel broke and then I fitted it in place, then stitched it up. I like to clamp the work in place and then tack the ends in two places then the centre. From there I work in a clockwise rotation doing 3 to 4 stitches every 6" all the way around, then I start at the beginning and skip every second weld to prevent excessive heat and warping. Every second time around I wait until the metal cools so it feels luke warm to the touch and then start again adding 3 or 4 stitches to every run until they all join up. Work great and looks good too.

Today I built the bib stiffener for the bottom inside doubler. Another load is going to the sand blaster today. Hopefully when I get back in after next weeks work stint I will have some parts to paint up and I can start to reassemble the frame
