I just bought a 1983 BJ42 that has an electrical gremlin running around in it. It has the 24 volt system. Left headlight turns itself on whenever it want(usually after hitting a bump), with switch TURNED OFF.
Was hoping someone would have a wiring schematic for the headlight circuit that I could use to troubleshoot.
Thanks,
Ted

BJ42 Wiring Diagram

Thanks for the wiring diagrams. After looking at the diagrams, I can't see how my left headlight is turning itself on when hitting a bump, without the right one coming on also.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ted

Is this a Cdn spec 24V BJ42? If it is, it has the evil center tap system for the headlights. If not...ignore the rest.

The link above has the evil center tap Cdn spec BJ42 headlight diagram on the last post.

Your left side (correct orientation from inside looking out) headlight is the 12V one, in the evil center tap system. It's a convoluted routing mess to bring all the headlight wires into the open, but you may well have too, to see where the issue is. To avoid that, you could start with the headlight dimmer switch. This is where the evil center tap system is controlled.

Bj42 headlight turns itself on

Yes my BJ42 is a Canadian spec vehicle. When you said to check the Dimmer Switch, did you actually mean to say check the Dimmer Relay? Where is this infamous Dimmer Relay located?
Thanks,
Ted
