BJ40 - What is EDIC?

Well it's time for an update. The old starter apparently had a bad solenoid and we were unable to obtain parts so I ordered a reman starter from Specter and after replacing the 11 tooth gear on the reman starter with a 9 tooth gear we got her going. Problem solved.

Now that I can start the truck and drive it. I'm back to looking at this engine and trying to figure that little dipstick. I pulled it out and it is in fact a dipstick although it was dry on the end - What is the purpose of it?

Hi Greg

Just like any other dipstick, if it's not showing any oil level then you've got the likelihood of "insufficient lubrication" (and consequent increased-wear) for your injection pump (IP).

Later model B engines automatically feed the engine's oil through the IP but your early engine has its IP oil completely separate from the engine's oil.

So before running your engine again you need to immediately remove the IP drain plug to drain whatever oil is left in there, replace the plug, and refill your IP to the correct level on the dip stick.

In fact it's just like doing an oil change on your engine, except here
  • there's no oil filter to change simultaneously, and
  • internal lubrication is achieved by "splash" instead of "oil pump"

PS. It might pay to perform another oil change (for the IP) sometime soon too (assuming your giving this BJ40 some use), especially if you have found the drained oil to be discoloured or sludgy.

PPS. I'm guessing you may have to refill via the dipstick tube because looking at that diagram I can't see any fill plug. (Maybe the owner of another older B or older H engine can chip in here and confirm this.)

What would the prescribed type of oil to use here?

Whatever you're using in your engine Greg.

(I use a diesel-specific 15W-40)

I've never seen that thread before..

Rufus knows his stuff with these older engines.

It has always surprised me why someone hasn't run a thread on an early BJ40 or HJ45 (say 1976) and shown off all the quirks they have compared to later models..

BTW- Don't worry about "SAE30" ... Just use the same oil you're using in your engine (as I recommended before).

Hi @overton , I know I am bumping an old thread, but do you still have that 1978 BJ40? I think you have the Diesel B Engine in it? I am in the process of restoring mine with a Diesel B Engine and a 1978 model with the help of a local shop, but the shop guys have lost quite a few items due to their carelessness. If you still own the 1978 one, would you be kind enough to help me for a few questions?
1- Does your BJ40 have an Engine Kill Switch/lever on the dash or do you switch off the Engine by just turning the ignition switch to off position? Refer the attached photo.

2- If you have the Engine Kill Switch, can you forward a few photos of the routing of the cable connected to the dash lever, especially at the Engine end, where the cable is connected? and showing the shape of the bracket connected on the Engine side? It would be a great help.
Thanks in advance.
