In the process of rebuilding my front end and picked up some grease tonight. I have searched around town and couldn't find what the board recommended (Amsoil Moly Grease). I did find the following Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease for the wheel bearing and Valvoline Moly Fortified Multi-Purpose grease for the knuckle bearings and birfs. Will these choices be OK?

That's what I used. I haven't had any problems yet.

I find that a LOT of people get all fired up about using a specific kind of grease. Unfortuneately in most of the world you don't have these kind of choices, you use what's available. Places around the world where cruisers have been running for a LONG time on what many of us would call 'inferior' grease.

Just make sure you use an appropriate amount.

'eh- no, I think mine was synthetic now that I look at it, and it came in a tube, like would be used in a grease gun.

Like I said though- I'm sure it's fine.

When packing my birf cavity I did not pack it completely full, probobly 75%-80% full. Some people pack it completely full- the FSM does not specify an amount.

I like using Lubri-Plate 3000 for for the knuckle bearings and birf. Tacky, moly and extreme pressure grease that likes to stay put...Gets on everything... http://www.lubriplate.com/

Tried these guys http://powerpunch.biz/Power_Punch_Greases.html grease for wheel bearings when they had some at a local supplier. Shortly after this, Lucas seemed to become the product for the venders to showcase, and I have not found Power Punch again in Canada, though I have not looked real hard as I bought enough to last me a while. Almost out and time to contact them direct. A buddy tried this on his bobcat, and it was the only grease he found that let him work it hard, and did not push out in less then a 1/2 days work like every other grease he had tried (he did not want to use Lubriplate 3000 as it's black and gets on everying.... Jury is still out, but I like it so far. Very stringy...gets on everything ...

That said, some grease is better then no grease and everyone likes the ones they use, so you should be fine...

Sorry to dig up this old thread but I'm getting ready for my fist birf rebuild and I am interested in birf grease. When to a checker and an autozone and the best moly fortified grease I can find is Valvoline Durablend (semi synthetic). Is that going to work for the birf and the knuckles?

Thanks.

Reviving this thread once more!

like azausie the best grease i have found is durablend semi synthetic. The thing that confuses me is that it says it can be used in wheel bearins for all european and japanese cars. shall i use it in the wheel bearins as well as birf and knuckles? or should i use mp for wheel bearings and moly for all else?

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic for everything. Even use it in my shackles :D

Good, high quality stuff.

The book says moly for birfields, mp for everything else. I put moly on everything, others put mp on everything. Wheel bearings on disc brake wheels supposedly heat up more so "hi temp disc brake wheel bearing grease" was invented. The Mobil 1 and the durablend both meet that criterion. Valvoline durablend seems fine, I've used it. I try to get the V. "synpower" moly grease, since it costs more(it must be better) 'cause nothing's too good for my FJ 60 jewel.

Yeah we do worry too much.

Im gona go ahead and use the durablend semisynthetic with moly for the knuckles and durablend semy syn. w/o moly for the wheel bearings.

wish me luck.

The moly is supposed to be better for the shearing forces in a birf.
I ordered the Amzoil moly online and used the mobile one synthetic for the wheel bearings. But then again I worry too much....way too much!

Well going with the durablend.
Yep gona use durablend.
