Hello there,

I'm contemplating designing a bike rack to help me transport my mtb around. My LC doesn't have the toyota's crossbars and bike accessories here in KSA are scarce and very expensive. I my idea is to utilize the spare tire swing out and connect a U shaped bar. A fork mount is attached to the U bar and the rear wheel of the bike rests on the spare tire. I thought about using a hook just like those used hanging bikes on walls but it wouldn't be sturdy and could damage the spokes during rough roads sections. Of course I have make the fork mount as well since when don't have them readily available.

The following drawings should help explain the idea.

The blue part in the first picture is the addition to the spare tire carrier. I'm thinking of drilling into the spare tire bar in three areas and connecting the U bar.

In the second picture I show how I expect the bike to be during transportation. The bike could move with the spare tire when opening the trunk.

I'm I missing something? Any ideas for improvement or suggestions?carrying the bike inside isn't an option since there is plenty of stuff that doesn't come off the car.

Just want to get this straight...will your bike be anything like this one? see attached. I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

Let's not forget the importance of bicycle safety. This is my helmet design and bike mounting idea.

And to the OP, there are a bunch of really good threads on here about racks and mounting solutions. All jokes aside, there are some good ones out there. The hitch style ones that can swing away or pivot down are the easiest solutions. (If you're able to get them where you are) Where is KSA? Is that Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? If so, I'm guessing you have restrictions on anything hitch mounted?

Just call some of the shops in Dubai. Most of what they have isn't that expensive, but who knows if they can get it to you for a reasonable cost in the Kingdom (of Saudi Arabia).

Do you have a hitch? Hitch racks work well and can also be made.

I don't have a hitch. I like hitch racks but I don't have a place to store them. I prefer a mounting option that I don't have to take down.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We don't have restrictions per say but I'm here for a short period and I don't want to invest much in gear that I can't resell and get my money back.

I'll see that option. I'm sure Dubai have more specific and better price-wise options.

Here's the mounting style I'm trying to achieve, without the use of suction.

Since you have a swing out tire carrier already, I think your idea is great. You could probably fit a few bikes side by side, depending on the width of your swing-out.
The tricky part would be the attachment of the bar/frame extending upwards from the tire carrier. There would be a considerable stress, with possibility for fatigue.
Also provide for a safety strap of some kind, in case the fork comes loose.
