I have an idea club day or meeting or outing, Big Creek, the whole site can be rented for a day with instructors for $35 per truck (Gulches is $25), 10 truck minimum and 30 max. I learned that today during the trail run. Was thinking, I like Gulches, great place, but if we get 10 trucks to come, Big Creek is a lot closer to Charlotte and a lot bigger. And we get some awesome instructors/guides for the day. All we need to do is contact Scott Fields at the off road school for potential dates.

So today was the trail ride, started at the school at 9:30, moved to Big Creek for safety brief and rig up, air down. The place was impressive, Scott and company train mostly Ft Bragg military, spec ops troops there. The only thing, it was mostly Jeeps! They look great and menacing, and boy did they get stuck... I am proud to report that I did represent Cruisers well, very little wheel spin and never got stuck. Overheard a few say "I got to get me one of those". By the way, love my lockers and Hercules tires, made me look like a champ.

And me showing off thanks to lockers and tires. I was last in the run, I think only 2 jeeps made it up, cruiser did it slow and smooth on first try, made it look effortless, pretty amazing truck.

By the way, just for perspective sake, when my other club rents a race track, like CMP or Roebling Road (which we are doing in March), its about $250 a head, with 30 cars on the tarmac! (Plus gas, brake pads, brake fluid, oil change, extreme tire wear) Add to that corner workers tips too.

So this idea of $35 for a day of fun in the truck in the woods while hunting for Big Foot footage is extremely appealing. And every "obstacle" had a bypass for wussie chickens like me.

Wussie chickens! HA! You're showin' em up!

Yeah Izzy, I'm down for this. Just curious, for that $35 rate, does it have to be during the week or can we get it on a weekend? And is there a more expensive/cheaper season? In other words... Are there black-out dates? :hmm:

Assuming there isn't something else going on, I'd love to learn from the guys that train our military how to wheel. And spend all day in a park with good friends.

That's the weekend rate! I Didn't ask about weekdays. Scott said just get in touch with him and he can check calendar. We could, for example, set up to arrive the previous afternon and camp at the off road school site, which is set up for it anyway, then do the trails the next day.

Or just drive in that morning if you are close. It's an hour from my home.

Cool! Count me in! Maybe @FJ Junkie could consider it for an event? Perhaps the evening prior could coincide with a HAMOM or something...

Is the only way to get on the trail via a class or can you just go pay a fee and wheel for the day?

It is private property, not open to public or probably manned all the time, so you have to go with class or paid group.

I'm game.
Met Scott while he was teaching a recovery class at the Overland Expo. Been planning to check his place out since then. I'm subscribed to to the thread and hoping it'll all come together.

That rock area looks awfully familiar. Could it be the same trial that the ONSC first ran back around 2004/5?

Great idea!

Iggy and I were the only ones without a Jeep related disease at the 101 class.

Wouldn't be the same trail.

This is on separate property from the OHV trails and up the road a bit from the outpost and UROC facilities.

I have helped build this place over the last few years now. As was said it was just started being built by hand a couple years back. I know the owner of the land pretty well also. That is the place my FJ62 got her first trail damage on a couple years back while building the perimeter trail. You have to pay to go there but it is fun, esp winch hill most times. Have cut down many a tree there to build those trails. Even dented the wifes GMC there on a workday. Still go up there every once in a while to help build new trails as we are still building new ones.

Regarding adding this trip to the calendar... Would anyone want to head this trip in August? I know it's a ways off but in the spirit of having an event per month, August is the month needing a trip.

I think that this might be a good idea, with instructors. I know that a refresher course would not hurt my feelings and that Heather would certainly benefit from getting information from someone other than me cause lord knows I am no expert. After hearing stories of a truck being pulled by another truck using the winch line of the stuck truck, I think many of us could use some "professional" training.
