TL;DR: I finally got a diesel cruiser!

Long time listener, first time caller.

Well that’s not exactly true. True for this sub-section of MUD, but I have a 1966 FJ40 I call Helga that is my first “build thread”. Her build thread is here. I have also owned 2 other 80 series trucks (91 FJ80 then a built 97 LX) as well as cutting my teeth on far too many other 4WD Toyotas (4Runners, Pickups, etc) to list here.

However, I have always had more than a passing interest in the diesel versions and like many folks here on MUD the diesel Land Cruisers were the ultimate cat’s meow, bee’s knees, etc.

So, after deciding my Tundra was actually too absurdly huge for my liking, after deciding my 1st gen Tacoma was too small for me despite wanting one for as long as they’ve been around, I realized an LC was just right and I wanted back into one for my daily driver.

Enter Land Cruiser soul searching mode (again). I’ve always wanted a 60 series but they are at or near 40 series prices for a good driver. I also wasn’t sure I would love daily driving one. I also really like the 70 series trucks… hmm, that’s an interesting idea. I had flirted with importing/buying an imported LC in the past but I would start scratching the surface and chicken out every time.

This time would be different it turns out. Started with my usual pestering of the usual suspects, AJ, Jimmy, Dave and Galen about imported cruisers. This time I took it a step further and enlisted the help of a friend who had imported several vehicles including an LC from Japan in the past. He hooked me up with his contacts and the auction site he used.

The world of JDM auction houses is a wild one full of intricacies and processes I was very unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, I started getting the hang of it all and shopping for a cruiser to import. In my searching I discovered the very cool and interesting KZJ78, a 4 door diesel 70 series looking Prado on coil springs that looked badass despite the rectangular headlights. On the other hand, I know the 80 series very well by now and non-drivetrain related parts are much more readily available in the States. Also, the KZJ78 is still relatively smaller than the 80, possibly too small for what I want.

After weeks of searching and crunching numbers on importing either a KZJ78 or an HDJ81, I decided to search the old FB Marketplace and Craigslist for one that had already been imported. There were surprisingly more than I thought there would be. There was the typical gamut ranging from too expensive to too clapped out or modified for me. Then I ran across this gem on the Marketplace in Rowlett, TX. Same year and color as my first Land Cruiser but with far fewer miles and tons of the JDM goodness I really wanted. A few conversations with the seller and a price agreed upon, I was set to pull a u-haul trailer up and snag her over the weekend.

Carpet and seats are damn near immaculate. Headliner and dash are pretty great. Even the D light still works!

Things that don’t work:
Missing Cruise stalk (wtf?). Fixed!
Cooler box (orifice tube, condenser?)
Washer nozzles Fixed mostly…

Current configuration:

Plans:
Dobinsons stock height springs
Dobinsons steering stabilizer
Add factory tow hitch and trailer wiring
Trailer break controller?
Turbo related gauges
Turn up the boost!
Recover steering wheel
Keep it fairly stock (looking at least)

Not much to report so far. Been tinkering with a few mods here and there, but mostly just fixing or replacing stuff when it becomes too annoying, i.e bulbs, struts, AC charge, etc.

Also decided to spurge on a new spare tire to match the setup the PO put on her (Toyo AT3 & Nomad Sahara) since what was under the truck was completely trashed. I’ve never bought “expensive” fancy wheels for a rig before. Historically, I have either run oem wheels (new or existing) or some cheap steelies of some sort. I’m actually really digging them. I might’ve picked something slightly different but these are pretty badass. Digging the AT3s also. Anxious to see how the do for me.

In an effort to prepare for my goal of squeezing more performance out of this old girl by turning up the boost, fueling, etc. I have started the process of adding some gauges. So taking the advice of my new best diesel friend @davegonz I purchased some gauges in the EGT, boost & water temp flavors to monitor critical metrics and avoid melting expensive stuff.

This project coincidently coincided with the purchase of my first 3D printer. And so I set about the task of designing and printing various parts I have dreamed up/borrowed from smarter people for my new 80. One of these projects is called “where can I stick 3 gauges in an early 80 dash?”.

Iterations:

I dig it, but it covers more of the cluster than I’d like.

Not in the ideal location but not terrible. Plus it utilizes a relatively uncluttered section of the dash. Probably could’ve aimed it even more towards my eyes but I think it’s good enough for who it’s for.
Version 3 it is. Mounted!

Still need to finish wiring and installing sensors but I was able to tackle the EGT probe install while the wife didn’t know my whereabouts.

It’s nice to only be slightly nervous about drilling a large hole into my exhaust manifold instead of being outright terrified. Something about refurbishing a clapped out 40 will do that to a guy.

love it! off to a great start! I'm sure your already know but worth looking into your car's history (if you have records) about the rod bearings. If it looks like they haven't been done I would do them or at the very least test your oil. Good thing to do before turning up the boost, you don't want to have to put a crank in it.

Absolutely! I think I already have everything I need except maybe a plastigage. Got everything from Radd Cruisers. Decided to get the ACL race bearings and OEM bolts. Never had to do anything of the sort so I'm a bit hesitant. Any tips/tricks would be immensely appreciated. I wonder if I could only let out a little bit of oil to test... 🤔

if you’re talking big end bearings there actually dead easy to be honest. the hardest part is getting the oil pan off! also you need to have a breaker bar and a socket for the rod bolts (i believe it’s a torx socket) and a torque wrench. the bearing cap comes off easily. you can push the pistons up a little and slide out old bearings and insert new ones). replace bearing cap and torque bolts. use a good fipg on oil pan and don’t forget to replace oil pick up if you remove it. a friend of mine had his pan in place but not bolted up before remembering that important piece of engine!!

yea pretty easy, make sure you keep things clean, mark all your bolts so you are 100% all of them are torqued. Needs to be dry between the bearing and rod/cap and assembly lube between the crank and bearing.

After far too much google searching and talking to small town parts house guys unnecessarily I finally got the correct socket for the connecting rod bolts. Turns out it’s nothing fancy whatsoever. Just a 12 point 12mm. Posting for posterity as I couldn’t find the answer anywhere.

Which gauges are these? Did you make the housing yourself? Thanks.
Those are Glowshift. I went for them because they more or less match the color of the stock gauges and the price was right. Actually just got them all hooked up last night finally.

Started playing with the fuel screw this morning. Turned it a whole rotation in, adjusted the idle and took her for a spin. Boy howdy did she scoot! Rolled coal pretty heavily and would peg 1500F until I let off. Got home and backed it back out 1/2 turn and readjusted idle. Should be golden but will verify tomorrow.

Nice, I need to get off my donkey and get these gauges done. What about the housing? Did you make it yourself? Great set up.

Oh sorry! Forgot to answer that part! Yes I modeled it in cad and 3d printed it. Thanks!

I emailed Glow Shift a while back and they said they didn’t make gauges for the HDJ81. Do you happen to have the model number or part number for these gauges? Thanks.

Well, I think I figured out why my cool box isn’t cooling…

A PO hit delete on everything from here to the engine bay.

With the gauges installed, I’ve been fiddling with the fuel. Was still getting high EGTs so I turned it down again. Also got a boost controller installed finally. Fiddled with that and got it to give me 14-15 psi reliably. Getting the over boost light and hitting 1300F occasionally. Feels pretty good, I just hope I’m not doing damage. Exhaust and/or intercooler next.

Also printed the 4th and hopefully final iteration of the gauge pod.

Keep forgetting to post this. Finally got around to swapping the BEBs on the 1HDT. Holy hell, what a job. I hope I never have to do that again. I was absolutely drenched in old nasty diesel oil the whole time. Pretty sure I ingested some and/or absorbed some via osmosis.

All but number 4 were still intact albeit with some damage on at least number 6 as well. Very glad I knocked it out. Also found some metal bits in the oil that appeared to be from what was missing on number 4.

Was the damage on no.4 the top or bottom shell? I have heard the bottom shell wears more. Thanks.
Actually all of the wear seemed to be on the top shells with the exception of the streaks on no. 4 and 6.
