Mark Watkins from So Cal TLCA has resumed talks with the USFS (Greg Hoffman) to get our Adopt-A-Trail program back on track and we could use SoCal 80's help. See the information below (cut and pasted from his post on the So Ca TLCA forum) for details on the run. Please contact Mark (dozertraxx@aim.com or TUFFTORQ here on Mud) for more information:

We are scheduled to meet with Greg Hoffman at the Big Bear Discovery Center on Saturday August 9, 2008 at 9:00 am to check out our new adopt trail. This is a black diamond (difficult) trail that has been closed for some time. This is a great opportunity and a lot better trail than our last assignment! Our goal and objective is to safely run the trail as a group and develop a maintenance plan. It would be incredibly awesome to get as many members and cruiser owners as possible to do our part to help out in the San Bernardino National Forest and assist in re-opening this trail in the future. This is an excellent chance to learn more about the adopt a trail program and learn about the fringe benefits of volunteering your time and energy. This is an open run for active members and non-members from Southern California.

Right on  a fun short trail connecting with Holcomb Creek.

I would be there but that's the same weekend as Sierra Trek so can't make it but please keep us updated on the next work date and plans.

Thank you very much for posting here to alert us as well. I am very interested in working with/on the adopt-a-trial program and was bummed when our previous trail adoption ran into problems.

I just had a daughter on Monday so I will be unable to attend this meeting but I will be involved on future endeavors with SoCal TLCA on this trail. I know there are numerous others in our group that will join in as well. That is a fun little trail.

Thanks to Mark Watkins for taking the initiative.

Can't anyone from SoCal 80's make it? I have a newborn and my wife would shoot me and/or the Cruiser if I went. Anyone?

Would love to make it and represent but I would hate to have my 80 be included with the trail as "maintenance" to the peeps that show up. I havent done my cooling system and the weather has been on the very warm side to push it.

Im very interested in doing work locally and in the mountains too. Youll definitely see me helping out in the cooler months (I love snow!).

Sorry, I would love to help but I am out of town then :frown:

MJR (My Jeep Rocks) is doing there AAT run on Holcomb Creek on the 9th. That could be why your date was pushed back a day. I have been a volunteer for a while now and get alot out of it. I recently brought Kevin McNulty, an editor for Petersons, with me on one of our AAT runs on Holcomb Creek. He wrote a very nice article about the AAT program that is in the October isue of Petersons. It's on the stands now. When I saw that you guys were going to be on 2N06X on Saturday I was jazzed because it connects with Holcomb Creek at it's southern end. I was hoping to see you guys out there. Oh well. If that trail has not had any work done on it since the fire, you guys will be in for quite a bit of work. Holcomb was a mess. Lots of downed trees on the trail. Should be fun. You guys with winches will get to put them to use.

The run has been postponed until September... Unfortunately, we could not get enough people to commit to the run this weekend. Mark wants show the USFS that the club is really interested in taking over maintainance of the trail and Mark thought that it would look better to the USFS if more than two club members (3 with calstyl2) showed up. Maybe more people will be able to attend in September after summer vacations are over. I'll post up again when we settle on a new date. Thanks!

I am sorry it had to be postponed Chris. Sounds like Mark made the right call. I should be able to make it in September.

Just got word of this run. Please post once you have a date in September Otis.

Removed a tree from the trail for you

After we finished our work on Holcomb on Saturday, we decided to run 2N06X on the way out. Just to see what kind of shape it is in. I winched this tree off the trail...

There are a few more downed trees that need to be moved, the brush needs to be trimed badly, and there are several off camber spots that may or may not need leveling out. Overall the entire trail is in need of some heavy work. There are a few tight spots that will make it interesting for you guys in the 80's, but nothing a well built rig won't handle. The rock garden is short but very fun. If you guys don't mind having a jeep in your midst I'd be happy to come along when you get the AAT run going.

How was Holcomb Creek? washouts and creek crossings gotta be a mess:confused:

I know it is part of the natural course and burns neccessary and over due but it still sucks to see that beautiful trail charred. Asi es la vida.

I am interested in helping out again.:)

I was out of action due to some medical issues, but am back in full swing now!:bounce:

Post up when you decide on a date - in September I can make Sundays easy, but Saturdays are a little harder.

I hope to see you soon.

It's a mess. MJR has done a lot of work on it. It's almost ready, from a wheelin standpoint. From an enviromental standpoint it won't be open for a while. All we have left to do is level out a few dangerous off camber spots, trim the brush back in a few more spots, and install a gatekeeper section at the east end. After that it will be runnable. But it's highly unlikely that it will be opened then. It prolly won't be opened till late 2009, maybe even 2010. It's badly burnt. It needs time to come back. In the mean time we will keep it ready.
