Rick,on my rig (1/75 fj40) those are welded T nuts,hope this helps.
Mike

Thanks Mike. My guess is mine (were) the same thing. I guess what they are isn't important, as they no longer work, so it's just a matter of finding the most effective way to rid myself of them! Sounds like I've been given plenty of options above.

Thanks, all, for the replies!

X3 on Rivnuts or Nutserts, they can solve many problems.

Rick,

I just checked, I have a passenger side, really good shape other then 3 holes up front where the PO had mounted something and the fact that it is black. Yours if you need it. Also the nuts are welded not floating.

Okay so it stopped raining for me long enough to take a picture. Here is a shot of my passenger bib to panel mount.

The bolts go through a captured nut on the right side, that is floating in a metal cage. You can see the bottom one has some gaps.

And yes, I know my locking nut is not snugged down tight. I didn't have a large enough washer at the time, so I used what I had in the tool box. I'll fix it later.

Do all FJ40's have that red gasket running between the bib and the apron? If so, mine is definitely not present!

No that's a home made jobber by a previous owner. I have never seen a red one on another Fj40. However, having a gasket there is not a bad idea. PO also put the same red gasket cut to size for the hood hinges. The toyota OEM gasket for the hood hinges is black and I plan to cut some black ones as well when I get around to it. I'll probably swap this out as well with some black rubber when I decide to pull the bib apart for some rewiring and paint R&R.
