Getting ready to upgrade to 285/75/16 BFG AT's. I have done research and some fellow mudders I know have them. The only negative I keep hearing is that rocks and gravel can be a problem in getting stuck in the tread. I haven't heard this from fellow mudders mostly tires sites and comments on those site.

Anyword on the validity of this?

Yup. big time. and they load up with snow and mud. and they are nearly as loud as the MT's; which wear almost as long.

why is that? Is it because of tread pattern? I have alway had toyo at's

MT's wear out much faster and the are louder (bigger tread lugs = more road noise and wear) BFG AT's are not loud and last a long time. They will pick up more with the wider tread and lug pattern.

Lug pattern spacing. The MT's have larger spacing with less lugs/tire. Thereby having a less chance to hold rocks. I own both pair and the MT's are considerably louder and wear faster. If your in the mud, rocks and or snow go with the MT's. If it's your wife's daily driver (as mine is) and doesn't get wheeled much, stay with the AT's. I also run a set of Nitto grapplers on my 470. Tires are soft, quiet and are wearing faster than the BFG AT's.

I have BFG A/T and I like them except for the performance in mud and wet roads.

Their grip in wet roads is horrible, just because they use a hard compound to last longer.

If you drive a lot on wet roads I'd go with General Grabber A/T. They will wear faster also because of their softer compound.

Never gotten less than 50,000 miles on my bfg tires, great tires, good service when needed. 2 cents Mike

probably, not a tire guru by any stretch but I have had two sets of the AT's and two of the MT's, I think the MT's last almost as long, are only slightly louder (but at a lower pitch) and look better, plus they work better in everything that I drive in but maybe hardpack snow or ice. but then I would be into a set of dedicated ice tires and that's not something I need to worry about.:meh:

I have had BFG AT KOs for probably 8 or 9 years (had before and after the redesign.)

Good all around tire, good for road, fair mileage but stiff ride (3 layer side wall).

My experience is that they are not good in mud, unless you want to spin the bejesus out of your tires. If you mud, consider something else. My next set will be M/Ts of some sort, as now i am in the desert and want more rock grabbing. Due to the stiff side wall, the ATs don't flex too well.

I like em as a road tire and occasional trail tire. They are also pricey.

If MT's would've helped me here, I concede. :hillbilly: In fairness, this is a frozen lake underneath. Not even gravel/dirt or some other compound that could provide some grip when you dig down to it. Once you hit the lake ice, you're shoveling.

I've been happy with my 295 A/T's, but can't really comment on the mud/rock crawling aspect. Mine see more snow and ice and highway than anything.(Which really sucks now that I think about it :).

Have had good luck in the snow. On ice the hard compound is a drawback I'd say. Wearing has been excellent so far. Noise not an issue at all. So far 40,000 and counting. Lots of tread left for my uses. If I was playing in the mud, maybe less excited about them.

After all that though, I think I'll try a set of M/T's next. Probably in a 315 just to see what the fuss is all about. Maybe sipe them. If they suck, there's always Mudbay. :)

A little extra clearance can't hurt. We're flat here so if I lose some power, it won't kill me. It'll travel 80 mph all day long if I want it to. Gas mileage stays the same no matter how slow or fast it goes. Listen to the experts here before me. I tend to just get in and drive, oblivious to the details. Good luck!

edit: And yes, these are the same pics I've probably posted 10 times already in different threads. I'm married with 4 kids so I tend to replay my fun times over and over.....It's all I gots. :flipoff2:

Ive had great luck with BFG A/T's, on my fifth or so set. They are pretty quiet, have decent traction in the dry and last a long time. As said above, they dont do so well in deep snow or mud, the clog up fast until you get them spinning fast. They always have gravel in them too.

MT's wear out much faster and the are louder

Much faster?????

The fleet of vehicles I work on has found Mud Terrains to last longer than A/Ts.
Maybe because the tread is much deeper? (and a lot of other factors - stone chipping, punctures, etc)

And when you get bogged with your A/Ts, I bet you you say "but they are a little quieter"?

;)

MT's are mounted!!!

After much thought I decided to go with the MT's. I figure if I get 30K miles out of them then why not. Siped them as well, they look Grrrrreat!
