The snow that I was in had me sinking ~6"-8" into it with every step though it was much deeper.

The A/T's get a little noisier with wear, but NOTHING like the M/T's do. Even those seem to have gotten better. I remember mid 80's BFG M/T's making much more noise even when new.

Not by the time my GF is through packing it!

"and being a southern Left Coast dweller I don't have much experience with the stuff."
Practice in snow has a lot to do with it too. Not to diss on you at all, but snow can be tricky if you aren't used to it.

No worries. I'm aware that it is a surface that requires experience with to adapt a driving style to match, which is why I was curious about what I might have been doing wrong. Sounds like it was just too deep for those particular tires.

Snow Run

I went out today and tested the BFG's and they did great in the snow! It's like night and day compared to my last tires.

There's a cruiser under there:

My experience

I currently have 33x10.50 MT's

Snow: Sometimes depending on the snow I spin out a little bit, but never gotten stuck......maybe I shouldn't push the gas in all the way...hmmm.

Mud: Have never gotten stuck even when other SUV had to use chains.

Noise: Cannot give a fair assessment because I do not have any carpet or headliner....all rhino lined so it is loud.

How much does it usually run to have a set of these tires siped? Where is the best buy for the 33x10.50 MT's in Colorado? Sams? Discount? Other?

I got mine siped at discount for like 12-15 a tire.

I'm thinking of going to a 235/85r16 (32x9.5) all terrain for my 4Runner. That should give around the same contact pressure on snow. I have 10.5s on there now, and I feel they are too wide for a 4200lbs truck.

I am amazed at my BFJ AT's(on my 100) in the snow/ice, they are sniped and just keep me going no matter what, even with 40K+ on them.

I have BFG MT 33x10.5 on my 60 and they do actaully do well in the snow as they are sniped but just the all wheel drive, traction controll and other stuff make the 100 a great snow Cruiser

all my other rigs are AT's but I dont drive them in the snow

BFG MTRs are the WORST "snow" tires I've ever had. Got stuck in my driveway with a brand new set of 33X10.5s after a wet September snow a couple years ago. Had 'em siped & they improved a great deal. But I'll never buy another set for winter use. Wish I'd known about ATs (but they don't look as cool)...

I'll second that MTs don't work in snow unless siped.

On a different note, I added a Subaru Outback to the car collection when gas prices were high. I put some new hi-tech studless snow tires on it and all i can say is wow! While we didn't get as much snow here around Corvallis as Portland and Seattle did, we did get a fair amount. I drive 30+ miles to work each way and the thing was like being on rails. I hate to say this, but considerably better than my FJ60 or FJ40 ever did. And I really do hate to say it...

I have the BFG MTs and, yes I will admit that they are absolutely terrible in any type of snow that is less than 5inches deep. After that is where they excel. I had a set of ATs before these and those were just good all around, great on ice great in slush etc, but the MTs do really well in the deeper snow. I live in Gunnison, CO and it gets cold and snowy here, a few days ago I went out with my roommate for some snow bashing, it was no good until we got off the icy road and into the deep snow, plowed through a 5 foot plow pile and drove around for a bit in the 2-3foot deep snow.

imo

BFG ATs are great snow tires, but I'm starting to rethink the whole thing. Last winter I caught in a hellacious snow storm crossing the Kettle Range in NE Washington. It was hairy, but my Kia rental (have to love front wheel drive) plowed on through--even when big rigs had to stop to chain up. Now, getting started once you stop can be a b****, and when the snow is really deep lack of clearance can be a big problem (as I recently rediscovered in more than a foot of snow in Spokane)...but i was able to dig my way out and did fine on sometimes deep, rutty, semi-hard pack. That said, I would have rather had my Cruiser--probably would have saved me almost 2 hours of digging out of the parking lot.

And Subarus? My friend lives in the mountains around republic, WA and drives an old (like mid-80s or early 90s) Subaru everywhere. It takes some skill, but it's almost impossible to get that thing stuck. Awesome vehicle.

yes! I drove over Vernonia Hwy on Christmas Day. Between Vernonia and Scappoose it was 2-3 ft of snow and two tracks. Left it in 2wd the entire time except when I had to move over to get around the 2 trucks I encounted the entire day.

Shot at the top on hard pack. Everywhere around me trees were snapping and growning. High Def theaters got nothing on this!

What a great picture...it's almost as if the forest is daring your rig to make it through.

Show off! :flipoff2: ;)

not worried about the Cruisers, just all the other idiots that are out when it snows that have no clue how to drive, the 100 is replaceable.....the others are not.

Amen! I usually DD the '85 pickup. Much easier to find body parts than the land cruisers. (it runs pizza cutter AT/KOs)
