??best tires??

I know, I know. Almost ever magazine has those tire reviews, and I've read all of the tire posts. I just want to know what you, my fellow mud haters, like the best. I'm planning a road trip from Prudhoe Bay to the southern tip of Baja next summer when I transfer out of Alaska. I'm trying to decide if I'm gonna do the Continental US part completely off road. On road, #3 is a given. Any help for the Off Road Part?
My 3 top choices right now:
1) Toyo M/T 255/85R16
No personal experience, a friend has them and says they are heavy and knocked his MPG down. But it seams that they are the tire of choice of every off-road mag vehicle out there.
2) Pro Comp XM/T 285/75R16
A bit lighter, and a lot cheaper.
3) The good 'ol BFG A/T. 285/75R16
I've never run them on the LC, but I've had a total of 3 sets on 2 P/U's and I love'm on them. I've even gotten 25k out of a set on my old prerunner. Great in the dirt, no better than slicks in the mud.
What say ye?:bounce:

There are a huge number of threads posted on this issue. Search is your friend. Also at the top of the forum there is an FAQ and there is a tire FAQ there. Sounds like you are planning a great trip.

I read the tire FAQ, and everybody loves the BFG A/T. Does anybody have experiance with the Pro Comp or the Toyo? What about the Goodyear M/T?

I ran the Toyo AT on my Dodge 1/2 ton 4wd and was pretty happy. However, I prefer trailing over rockcrawling. They are not as aggressive as the BFG but I got 43k out of the Toyos and they were daily drivers.

The Goodyear tires that I have run across are all pretty soft. Not sure how the MT is personally, I have been told by a few folks not to bother with them.

I have owned 2 sets of BFG a/t's and both ended up dryrotting before the tread wore out. I still have to of the better ones as trailer tires , they are 11 years old. I recently bought a set of retread mud tires ( becouse of cost) and so far have no complaints. 5 33x12.5x15 for 495 bucks shipped to my door.

What company did you use?

someone said nipple... where is junk these days?

Thanks for the info, lets keep it coming!

bfg m/t. not any louder. More of what you want, less of what you don't. I worked at Les Schwabb and people were getting enough miles out of these tires with regular rotation that I'm not going to type it here...noone will believe me.

as for toyos, this is the only company that uses a seamless bead = a tire that balances out better

I had the BFG AT's and HATED them.
They chunked off miserably, and the didnt clear AT ALL!
I ended up going with the BFG MT's and love em.
I do spend most of my time wheeling pretty rocky terrain, so it may have a lot to do with application, and not tire quatliy.

I love my MTR's

Some might consider them soft but I love my MTR's. They are great on the rocks and clear well in the mud. (Not that I like Mud) I got em siped and they have treated me very well. They air down well too. I can run them at 12psi all day with no worries.

BFG A/T's are THE single most over-rated tire on the market. They are a good value and thats about it... The don't clear out in the mud, they don't hook up on rocks, and their sidewalls are like "bible paper"

Thats my opinion.

Well everyone's entitled to their opinion, aren't they? :flipoff2:

For someone like me who DD's their rig, the BFG's wear like iron and perform pretty well offroad for a tire that has such good highway manners. If I wanted a tire that grabbed the rocks and cleared mud out quickly, then I'd buy a different tire, for sure.

BFG's recent redo of the MT might be a good solution for you...I think they're supposted to have better manners/less road noise than the current/ older model. depends how far off road you're planning on getting. the ATs might do the trick on their own.

For a 99% on road rig, BFG A/T's are fine. They are quiet, etc; however, I've read multiple acounts of people only getting 20K miles from them if they have any extra weight on the rig (bumpers, tools, etc).

I've owned them (35x12.50x15) and decided to never go back... If a soda can flipped into the side of them the wrong way the sidewall would tear.

One solution: Get the lifetime replacement warenty from discount tire for an extra 40 bucks and they are a good deal. They will even replace on early wear....

Are we talking about the same tire here? I'm on my second set of BFG ATs, I liked the first set so much I bought them again. I got 60k out of the first set. A friend of mine ran them on his Ford F350 work truck, a deisel, and got 70K out of them. Granted, they are no mud tire, but they work very well everywhere else and I have never had a flat, much less a sidewall issue.

My buddy has a 01' Z71. Bought a set brand new, rotated every 5K miles and got a total of 22K out of them. Just stating my experience.

In addition, I rubbed up against a tree and cut my side wall with them.

I have nothing against the company, the new KM2 is an awesome tire...
