Best steering column For V-8 conversion

Are you doing power steering? If you are leaving it non-ps, the stock column works fine.

I ran stock steering with my V8 conversion for several years before doing a PS swap. I used the SOR V8 headers that snake up over the stock steering box. If I had that to do over again, I would probably skip the headers and just go with rams-horns.

On an other V8 conversion we did, we used a Monte Carlo column with tilt. Worked fine, just looks kinda dumb. Not my choice.

If you want to go with a custom column, Flaming River has tons of stuff, mostly marketed toward the street rod crowd, but Im sure something would work.

9 times out of 10, I would say stick with the stock column.

So what is the most common column to use ?and if you got pics please post some for me
Sam

What are you working on?

Year/Make/Model?

You are replacing the engine, why would you be replacing the steering column as well? Is it missing?

I am working on a '72 fj40 w/a 350 chevy conversion it has rams horn manifolds and a Saginaw steering box mounted at the front frame rail . And I dont have a steering column yet

Most guys who don't use a stock column use a non-Toyota tilt column. That's ok, but it does put you into the manufacturing business. You must fabricate whatever is needed to anchor at the firewall, and whatever is needed to connect your saginaw steering driveshaft to your non-Toyota driveshaft (u-joint wise).
Good luck with this Kimosabi!!!!

I run the stock one on my 77 with sig ps I liked the toyota wheel but if you are rewiring a gm colum makes it easier. Look at flaming river they make a firewall bushing anchor I believe they make a few differnt ones for the hot rod industry

search is your friend, try it. search for Chevy tilt column you will find lots of info.

If you use any after market/non FJ40 column you will need to do fabrication. Earlier Cruisers used a oval or oblong firewall mount where the column floated. Later used a more square mount and the shaft inside the column rode on a bearing or bushing. I think the 72 is probably the earlier floating kind. You will need to fabricate an oblong plate with the proper bolt holes with an elongated hole for the column to go through. I welded this to my column (I was a bit nervous about this because I didn't know what the heat would do to the column but I had no problems (Ididit column). If you have the later square design I'm not sure what to do but I think BTB has some sort of adapter (They don't for the earlier) Next you will need to attach it to the dash. Ididit and probably flaming Flaming river have hot rod dash attachments but I don't believe they will work for our application. i used the stock attachment which is a piece of formed metal which I welded to the column and bolted to the dash.
If you like I can take pictures tomorrow and post.

I've done literally hours of searching on the subject. And the responses from Downey and others were the clearest I'd read yet.

I was still at a loss whether there absolutely had to be fab work done to install the GM column.

This was a good question with good responses.

i went ididit tilt column i think it was 32" and the bracket from btb that mounts to the firewall.
